Yes indeed, interesting problem. Could probably be solved with an algorithm generator. Might even be worth a thesis if it hasn't been done before. -- Johann | email: invalid -> com | www.myrkraverk.com/blog/ I'm not from the Internet, I just work there. | twitter: @myrkraverk

Correct. The algorithm is not similar to bublesort.
It is similar to what Knuth calls Straight Selection, but misses on couple of obvious simplifications.
The best O(N*N) algorithm for sorting strings (or for any sort in which comparison is significantly slower than copying/moving) is, of course, Straight Insertion, but that's knowledge is not particularly important when one wants to sort 10M strings.

But in terms of big O notation they are the same:
O( n^2 ) = O( n^2/2 )

You are wrong, probably because you don't know what big O
is:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_O_notation
I refer you, specifically, to the "Properties" section of
that article, where the last property, multiplication by a
constant, states just what I wrote:
O( k * N ) = O( N )
if k is positive.

One weakness of the O() notation is it focuses on large problems, but sometimes the nature of the problem is inherently or practically limited in size.

Plain (non-osculating) bubblesort's worst-case == N^2 comparisons. Or, may be (N-1)^2, if one wants to win an argument.

I said that. But this is almost true what I said since each inner iteration begins one element behind the first iteration. So it's not N^2 but around N^2/2, exactly N*(N-1)/2 - worst-case.

This is getting muddled because (a) there is no visible algorithm to
refer to, and (b) no one is saying what is being counted by the formulas
being given.
Here is a minimal bubble sort. It's about as bad an implementation as
you can get whilst still being called bubble sort. I think this is what
already5chosen is calling "plain (non-osculating) bubblesort":
void bsort(int n, T A[])
{
bool swapped;
do {
swapped = false;
for (int i = 1; i < n; i++)
if (out_of_order(A[i-1], A[i])) {
swap(&A[i-1], &A[i]);
swapped = true;
}
} while (swapped);
}
The worst case occurs when the data are in reverse order. This
algorithm will do n*(n-1) comparisons and n*(n-1)/2 swaps in that case
so, depending on what you were claiming to count, both answers are
correct. I think already5chosen is using the usual measurement of the
number of comparisons performed, hence the disagreement with you.
A simple improvement (which I think you were hinting at) is to reduce
the range of the inner loop with each pass:
void bsort(int n, T A[])
{
bool swapped;
do {
swapped = false;
for (int i = 1; i < n; i++)
if (out_of_order(A[i-1], A[i])) {
swap(&A[i-1], &A[i]);
swapped = true;
}
n -= 1;
} while (swapped);
}
This better bubble sort does the same number of swaps as comparisons in
the worst case, namely n*(n-1)/2. However, this is not the version that
already5chosen was talking about.

Benita, there is no use in pettifogging about it. There are several varieties of bubblesort even as there are many varieties of quicksort w.r.t. pivot selection and partition strategy. The essential characteristic of bubble sort is that it scans the array repeatedly from bottom up, comparing the current element with the next and swapping if required. Of course, if you try very hard you can write a bubblesort that performs in O(N^2) even on a sorted array. That would be a very stupid variety of bubblesort. -- () ascii ribbon campaign - against html e-mail /\ http://preview.tinyurl.com/qcy6mjc [archived]

Is that a typo or are you mocking both myself and Bonita by conflating
our names? (I'm sure it's a typo!)

... and that it stops when a pass has been made that performs no swaps.
I don't think you could reasonably call anything without this test a
bubble sort. (And, personally, I's still call it bubble sort if it went
from the top down.)

I don't think it should count as bubble sort. There are, as you say,
lots of variations, but a line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Indeed. I did not mean to offent either of you. Sometimes a typo is just a typo -- unlike cigars, of course. > ...and that it stops when a pass has been made that > performs no swaps. Any working stop condition will do for me, including the very inefficient one in Bonita's example. > (And, personally, I's still call it bubble sort if it went > from the top down.) Agreed, but I hadn't thought of such an atrocity! In my opinion, the shoe fits as long the bubbles go up in cotinuous motion, which they certainly do retardless of stop condition. -- () ascii ribbon campaign -- against html e-mail /\ http://preview.tinyurl.com/qcy6mjc [archived]
