1 void psort(int n,char *x[]) {

3 for(i=0;i<n;i++) {
4 for(j=0;j<n;j++) {
5 if(strcasecmp(x[j],x[i])>0) {

7 x[i] = x[j]);
8 x[j] = temp;
9 }
10 }
11 }
12 }
This works, but is very slow. Like 6 seconds to sort an array of 10,000
elements.
What am I doing wrong?

I first believed the title and started writing an O(3)
sorting but then realised the title is misleading and you
are sorting an array of C strings. Take care.

Not as presented! You have a syntax error on line 7 and neither i nor j
are declared.

You can make it twice as fast by running the inner loop from i upwards,
but then it's still bubble sort. That's an example of what is called a
quadratic algorithm -- the time taken grows with the square of the data
size. Even amongst quadratic sort algorithms, bubble sort is considered
slow.
To get a truly faster sort, you need a better algorithm.

Just using a poor swap routine, if you do actually need to sort 10,000
elements. (10 or 100 might be fine.)
You might try this version:
#include <stdlib.h> // for qsort
int mystrcmp(char** s, char** t){
return strcmp(*s, *t);
}
void psort(int n, char *x[]) {
qsort(x, n, sizeof(char*), mystrcmp);
}

(Substitute your strcasecmp here. My MS C library doesn't have that
function.)

I'm using TCC (Tiny C Compiler), and it's declared in string.h.
__CRT_INLINE int __cdecl strcasecmp (const char *__sz1, const char
*__sz2) { return _stricmp (__sz1, __sz2); }

I actually want to sort 12,000,000 random string elements of length 2 to
16. No kidding. python does it in about 30 seconds (Timsort algorithm)
on my old computer.
You just call:
sortedlist = sorted(origlist)

Thanks
I tried qsort (with strcasecmp), but got screenfuls of strange stuff.
int comparechar (const void * a, const void * b)
{
printf("%s %s %d\n",a,b,strcasecmp(a,b));
return strcasecmp(a,b);
}
qsort(randoms, n, sizeof(char), comparechar);

These need to be ** not *. (Because qsort needs to be able to modify the
original char*. Not sure how the 'const' plays with that.)

And here, to offset the extra *, you need an extra dereference *, so *a
and *b.

If there is a type error here, just silence it with (void*)comparechar.
(There might be a proper cast, but void* is quicker.)
This the test I used myself (now using stricmp):
----------------------------------
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>
int mystrcmp(char** s, char** t){
return stricmp(*s, *t);
}
void psort(int n, char *x[]) {
qsort(x,n,sizeof(char*), (void*)mystrcmp);
}
int main(void) {
char *str[]={"one","two","three","four","five","six"};
psort(6,str);
for (int i=0; i<6; ++i) printf("%s\n",str[i]);
}
-------------------------------
Output should be:
five
four
one
six
three
two

Is sorted() written actually in Python? Does it use your original algorithm?
If I extend my small test with this addition to main() (needs #include
<time.h> added):
----------------------------
#define N 12000000
char **big;
int t;
big=malloc(sizeof(char*)*N);
for (int i=0; i<N; ++i) {
big[i]=str[rand()%6];
}
// for (int i=0; i<N; ++i) printf("%d: %s\n",i,big[i]);
puts("Sorted:");
t=clock();
psort(N,big);
t=clock()-t;
// for (int i=0; i<N; ++i)
// if (i<10 || i>(N-10)) printf("%d: %s\n",i,big[i]);
printf("\nSort time for %N strings was: %d\n\n",t);
--------------------------------
then sorting 12 million string pointers (of strings 3-5 characters long)
takes 1.2 seconds with tcc and 0.95 seconds with gcc-O3.
(This is for an in-place sort. To create a new list, just copy the
original, then sort that, to match the Python.)

No, these are correct. Writing the wrong type of comparison function
just leads you into more trouble later on. qsort takes a pointer to
an int returning function with two const void * arguments. That's what
you should provide.
> (Because qsort needs to be able to modify the original char*. Not sure

There's no problem with the const. The compare function does not (and
must not) modify the data being sorted.
>> {
>> printf("%s %s %d\n",a,b,strcasecmp(a,b));
>> return strcasecmp(a,b);

It's better to keep the type of the function correct and convert the
pointer that qsort passes to it. There is a general pattern that is
worth knowing. When sorting an array of T, qsort passes pointers to the
array elements to be compared as const void * data. You can write the
compare function with no casts like this:
int compare(cont void *a, cont void *b)
{
const T *ta = a, *tb = b;
return /* some expression probably using *ta and *tb */;
}
In this case, T is char *, and so it helps to actually use a typedef to
see the pattern:
int compare(cont void *a, cont void *b)
{
typedef char *T;
const T *ta = a, *tb = b;
return strcmp(*ta, *tb);
}
(Without the typedef you need to know how to put the const in the right
place.)

>> qsort(randoms, n, sizeof(char), comparechar);

Quicker maybe, but doubly wrong. Not only is (void *) the wrong type,
it's entirely the wrong kind of pointer. There is no need for any casts
at all, though a cast in the comparison function (as in my previous
post) is often simpler than writing local declarations as I did here.

This line requires a diagnostic from a conforming compiler, and there is
no need to "lie" about the type of the function. It's better to simply
pass a pointer to a function of the correct type.

You're right, the data is not modified via the compare function. The
extra level of indirection is so it can use the same void* parameters in
the compare function, that will work for any type of array element.

It compiles without errors/warnings on the 3 C compilers on my PC, as
normally invoked, and with the 3 C compilers on rextester.com, with
their default options, which for gcc were "-Wall -std=gnu99 -O2 -o a.out".
However C++ compilers don't like it.
If it's going to be a real issue, then just use the correct cast that I
couldn't be bothered to do. My aim was to get a working sort routine.

So now you know that none of these were conforming C compilers! Mind
you, the fact that most compilers, by default, accept a language that is
not entirely unlike C should, by now, hardly be news to you.

By why? It's far less bother just to give the function the correct type
to start with! There no need to cast the function pointer at all.
> My aim was to get a working sort

I used to make a good living porting code that was written so as to
"just work". Ironically, one of the very hardest was the Unix sort
utility because it played fast and loose with pointer types, and the
machine in question had three (two data pointer types and an
incompatible function pointer type).

I really don't care about that aspect any more.
I write or generate code that is C-like, I pass it through compilers
that presumably are compiling a C-like language, and the results
generally work.
Does it matter if it is not 100%, pure, conforming C?
In this case I know that the pointer format for all targets of interest
(see below) is compatible between function pointers and object pointers.
(Of more concern to me here, and something I will need to fix at some
point, is that the function passed to qsort needs to be specially marked
as a callback function in my C compiler.)

Because most of my C code is generated (I've recently reinstated a
revised C backend), I can generate C code for specific targets.
Here's a 42Kloc example for Linux 32-bits:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sal55/qx/master/rpi/qu32.c
It compiles without warnings on Linux with a 32-bit gcc compiler:
gcc qu32.c -oqq -lm -ldl
Including when using -std=c99 and -std=c11. But it fails with -std=c90
because it uses //-style comments.
No options are needed except what are necessary for practical reasons:
-lm -ldl are a gcc/Linux requirement
-m32 when gcc targets 64 bits as well as 32
-O3 to get better code
-o to name the output file
(-O3 results in one warning because I call 'fgets' without checking its
return value.)
They have been tested on these systems via gcc and/or tcc, whichever was
available:
qu32.c Linux/x86 (gcc)
Linux/ARM32 (gcc/tcc)
qu64.c Linux/x64 (gcc/tcc)
Linux/ARM64 (gcc)
qc32.c Windows/x32 (tcc)
qc64.c Windows/x64 (gcc/tcc/bcc)
(qq.m Windows/x64)
(Last is original source, all .c versions auto-generated from that.)
For me this is plenty good enough. If people want to pile dozens of
extra options onto compilers, that is up to them. I'm not interested
because usually I don't code directly in C.

Maybe not.

Any C compiler, whether fully conforming or not quite conforming,
might make assumptions about your code. If you call qsort with
a pointer to a function whose type is incompatible with what the
standard specifies, the behavior is undefined.
Do the non-conforming C compilers you use document that such code
will work the way you expect it to, and will continue to do so in
future releases?
Even if it happens to work in your narrowly defined environment,
the OP wasn't asking about how to write or generate code in your
environment.
No doubt you feel it's not worth the effort for you to write code
that conforms to the C standard, and I accept that it's not worth
it *for you*. But if you're giving advice about C to others,
don't expect us to accept your laziness without criticism.
