Another approach I've seen is to provide the student(s) with a simple
set of input routines, perhaps including a function that reads the next
line from stdin and returns a pointer to an allocated string holding the
line with the '\n' stripped.  (Basically gets(), but safe.)  Memory
allocation and deallocation can be dealt with later.
