That's why C99 defines a bool type.

C99's <math.h> defines a macro NAN.
Neither of these solves the problem of supporting pre-C99
implementations, but you can at least use #if to test for
__STDC_VERSION__ >= 199001L (and perhaps eventually phase out the
rest of your maze of #if and #ifdef directives).
