But it's not a non sequitur.  He's elaborating on Willem's comment on
Ben's preference for recursion.  He makes two additional points (a)
recursion will not buy you anything in time, and (b) recursion not
only wastes space, it can blow out your stack.  Scarcely one of your
great moments in computer science but both are valid  points.
