Throwing an exception would also let the caller deal with an error in
any way it likes.  The only drawback for C is that exceptions don't
exist, so we have to return error indications in some other way.
(I'm assuming that by "exception", Fernando means something like
a C++ or Ada exception, not an immediately fatal run-time error.)
