In C, you often need to go to the extra effort to take advantage of restrict or (slightly non-standard) __restrict pointers and choose a compiler which optimizes on the basis of the typed aliasing rules. Link-time optimizations (under at least 3 different names in various C compilers) may overcome some of the limitations. If your ground rules are not to take advantage of anything not supported by all available C compilers, these features are excluded. The question can easily become inappropriate.
