I don't see "following an established convention" as some kind of "advantage". It's simply following a custom. Believe it or not, long held customs can be negative. It has been a long held custom to write "using namespace std" at the beginning of every single C++ source and even header file since at least 1998, probably even earlier. Does that make it good practice? No. I don't care if using a single letter for a loop index has been a custom. I care about code readability. If the code consists of nothing but single-character names and symbols, it becomes extremely compressed and thus, often, harder to decipher. When variables actually state out what they represent or what they are doing, the code becomes easier to read and understand.

Most of people I know would have no idea what HDMI or cos mean (although supposedly they all should have had learned the latter in school). With GPS it's maybe better, but still they think it contacts the satellite first. There is no such thing as "universally used and understood". When my company sends me the quarterly newsletter, it is choked up with TLA-s whose meaning I have no idea of. I'm sure the authors are thinking these are all universally used and understood. It's all about the context. When a mathematician writes an article to fellow mathematicians working in the same field, the phrase "it clearly follows" means 1 - 10 pages of proofs left out, which the reader is expected to substitute, by the context, and which is left out from the paper because it would distract the reader from the main points.

What's with this arguing-for-the-sake-of-arguing? It still baffles my mind how what I have written is *so* controversial that people need to heavily oppose it and present every single stupid counter-argument they can think of, just for the sake of arguing. I'm sorry, but you are not going to convince me to write less readable code by arguing that "most people I know don't know what HDMI is". I cannot even understand why you are presenting such a stupid argument.

Right. Of course. For writing code there is no need to know what HDMI is, ergo, there exist people who write code and don't know that. I personally know some. Do you know what FIDA means? (Hint: it's not related to football.) Should these people avoid the acronym FIDA in their code doing FIDA, just because some random guy on the internet has not heard about it? > > What's with this arguing-for-the-sake-of-arguing? It is not my goal to convince you to write less readable code, quite the opposite actually. I'm just pointing out that what means 'less readable' is not universal, but depends on the people and on the context. Nobody here argues with you that one should write readable code and that over-using of auto or any other thing is bad. It's in the name. The opinions differ on what is 'readable' and what is 'over-use'.

Some people seem to have taken as their mission to argue to the end of time how utterly wrong I am. It's not a conversation like "I understand what you are saying, but here's my differing view on it". A good example of this is trying to "disprove" what I have been saying by coming up with "counter-examples" which contain artificially long variable names with a lot of needless redundancy in them. That's certainly not understanding and acknowledging what I'm saying (even if one disagrees with it). It's arguing in bad faith.

As far at I can tell he is offering nothing more than opinion, hyperbole, and an arrogant attitude that his opinions are better than everyone else's. There is one other thing that struck me, which is he seems to have a singular lack of interest in trying to understand what other people are saying.

When other people are saying that using full English words in variable names instead of acronyms makes code less readable, then you are right: I cannot understand what's wrong with these people. They cannot seriously think such a thing. You will have a really, really hard time convincing me of that.

Tim, I presume you're aware that your pattern of interactions here
differs from that of most other people. Specifically, you don't
post anything for a few weeks or so, then you show up and post a
lot of responses in a short period of time.
There's nothing wrong with that, but I suggest that you need to be
more aware of the effects of your interactions.
In this case, there was a lengthy thread that devolved into personal
insults and then largely died out -- until you showed up a week
later and rekindled it.
Read the room.

And what exactly is wrong with continuing this discussion? I presented the blasphemous proposition (which is quite commonly held) that using full English words in variable names makes code easier to read. Apparently this blasphemy was so utterly egregious that it elicited a dozen or so people to barrage me in a huge flamewar, trying to make me see the error of my ways and recant. When I refused to do so, it only strengthened their resolve. Which makes absolutely no sense. There was especially one person in this thread who apparently had taken as his life mission to oppose me no matter what, and to convert me to the right path (and it's the same person who started whining "you insulted me!!!" out of the blue), but clearly I am the bad guy here, apparently because I have committed blasphemy and heresy.

Too many people got worked up and misunderstood or misread what others were saying, and the discussion was getting too ugly. It was spoiling what is normally a friendly and respectful group. The only good way out of such threads is for people to appreciate it is over, and leave it all alone. And that means /really/ leaving it alone, not digging it up and bringing it into other threads with sarcastic comments. Pretty much everyone had managed that, until Tim made one of his rounds of fly-by necroposting. So let's please just leave it there.

In ideal world you would be sentenced to 6 months of programming in idiomatic APL. Unfortunately, the community of c.l.c++ has no power to enforce it. On a little more serious note, English is not a native language for 90-95 of World's programmers. Many (most) of them understand common abbreviations at least as well as full English words, but more likely they understand abbreviation *better* than full English words. On a lot more serious, almost philosophical note, this discussion reminds me a signature of Terje Mathisen. > And all this why? I asked what I did *so* wrong that it elicited such a barrage of heavy opposition. You can perfectly well disagree with what I wrote, but that doesn't really explain the heavy opposition. There's nothing controversial nor outrageous about what I said (especially because, as stated several times, this is a very commonly held opinion, as seen by numerous coding style guidelines out there.) I didn't think naming conventions in programming is such a holy topic that any disagreement turns into a war.
