#5415 — XAMPP MySql on XP 6mb csv file

Fromvjp2.at@at.BioStrategist.dot.dot.com
Date2014-06-22 22:23 +0000
SubjectXAMPP MySql on XP 6mb csv file
Message-ID<lo7l18$pso$1@reader1.panix.com>
I have a 6MB csv file, 15 million records. I need to put it into an SQL
database on XP. I got XAMPP but it says I need an earlier version for XP.
About half the fields are not needed, so I can see the actual input data
being less, assuming it imports one line at a time. I have broken it into 1MB
chunks using GNU32 split. I can also limit the data by excluding the records
with some fields beyond a certain value if I could do that during import, or
before merging the chunks.

Which version of XAMPP works on XP?

Can it import a 6MB text file?

Do any of the above techniques make sence or need improvement?

XP is no longer supported, per Microsoft. The first thing you need to
do is upgrade to a supported OS.

See above.

MySQL will handle a 6MB file quite nicely. In fact, it's a pretty small
file. 6TB might be a bit more complicated.

First of all, upgrade to a supported OS. You can still install MySQL
(either with XAMPP or separately), but the fact is - you need to update
your OS.

Do you know how to comprehend what was asked?
Xampp has been around for some 20 years.
So there is a version out there for XP.
Why should he spend big bucks just to make xaampp work on a system he does
not want?

Hell, Xampp was available for windows 95 even.
And here you are DEMANDING he change his OS.
Horsehockey!

I'm not demanding he change his OS, stoopid. Microsoft is. They no
longer support it. The fact this was going to happen has been well
documented for a couple of years.

Since MySQL is not a Microsoft product, please explain how the
willingness of Microsoft to support or not support something is
relevant. If he were asking about SQL Server it would be a different
matter.

The only one I see around here who has a problem with reading
comprehension is the one who doesn't understand the question posed,
which is "which verson of XAMPP works on XP".

I'm assuming you mean something other than MySQL. You should be able to
import CSV files using the LOAD function in MySQL. And the version of
XAMPP you're using may not be up to date. Where did you get it?

These are things I'd look at before I start poking at the actual
database.

It may be possible to find an earlier version of mysql that will run
under XP, but you may need to hunt for it. You don't need the *ampp
unless you also want the webserver and various script interpreters.

6Mb of data is easy for mysql.

You could try mariadb which is allegedly mysql compatible and claims to
install on xp:

https://mariadb.com/kb/en/installing-mariadb-msi-packages-on-windows/

(mariadb is a fork of mysql by people who don't think oracle should be
running the FOSS mysql project. I make no comment on the politics of it.)

Thanks. XAMPP is confusing. Been having trouble loading
into Access or OpenOffice and MySQL was recommended.
I've used SQL for decades (IBM DB2 on mainframe in 1986)

You are aware are you not that IBM has a free version of DB2 available
for a variety of platforms including Windows? If you know DB2 that
might be your best bet.

DB2 is even harder to install and administer than MySQL - not to mention
it requires significantly more resources. It has a lot of nice features
(I've been using it since 1988), but if you don't need those features,
MySQL is a much better choice.

There's no need to "hunt for it". Just go to the XAMPP sourceforge site
and download what you need. The earliest Windows version they have
available for download is 0.9, dated 2003-07-27. The most recent
version is 1.8.3 dated 2014-04-10. 1.8.2 should be fine on XP--they
changed to the newer Microsoft runtime with 1.8.3.

Note that the OP's stated requirement is for a database that can manage
this data, it's not clear that he needs the webserver or scripting
components of most *ampp packages.

Whilst Jerry's concerns might be valid, it is really up to the OP to
determine if their environment is appropriate for their needs, and this
includes upgrading the OS as needed.

If the OP just wants a database without all the bells and whistles of a
*ampp, I still suggest mariadb which is touted as a drop in replacement
for mysql and has an XP compatible installer.

You can pick the fields which to import.

Hopefully, none. But there are probably outdated, unsupported versions (of
Apache, MySQL, PHP, and Perl) interspersed with security vulnerabilities
that would still work. You do not want to use them.

Then your hope is dashed. From the README for XAMPP 1.8.2:

"* System Requirements:

  + 64 MB RAM (RECOMMENDED)
+ 750 MB free fixed disk
+ Windows 2003, XP (RECOMMENDED), VISTA, Windows 7"

> But there are probably outdated, unsupported versions (of

1.8.2 includes Apache 2.4.9, which according to the Apache site is the
latest stable release, MySQL 5.5.36 which is one release back from the
current one, and PHP 5.4.27, again one release back. These are hardly
the outdated antiques that you suggest. XP has only been EOL for two
months you know.

Please do not write about things you do not understand.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (the latest one) is strongly recommended for
running Apache 2.4 on Windows XP:

<http://mirror.switch.ch/mirror/apache/dist//httpd/binaries/win32/README.html>

The current MySQL Community Server GA release is 5.6.19, released
2014-05-30. The latest MySQL Community Server GA release for 5.5.x is
5.5.38 of 2014-05-30. 5.5.36 was released on 2014-01-31.

<http://dev.mysql.com/doc/relnotes/mysql/5.5/en/>
<http://dev.mysql.com/doc/relnotes/mysql/5.6/en/>

The latest stable PHP version is PHP 5.5.13, released 2014-05-29, which
fixes several bugs, and security vulnerabilities CVE-2014-0238 and
CVE-2014-0237. The latest version of PHP 5.4.x is 5.4.29, to which the same
applies. PHP 5.4.28 fixes several bugs as well. Finally, PHP support for
Windows XP and 2003 has been discontinued as of PHP 5.5.0 (2013-06-20).
