Such as? What I understand clearly is that you are an idiot-savant who
seems to know a great deal about ECMAscript and a lot of trivia about
the latest releases of everything but very little about the practical
operation of systems in the real world.

So you admit that it runs on XP. Or perhaps you believe that obtaining
Service Pack 3 for XP is an insurmountable obstacle? If so you should
learn something about Microsoft before you shoot off your ignorant
mouth. <http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24>

And so the utility of 5.5.36 is forever destroyed? Do tell us what
specific horrible thing will happen if one runs 5.5.36 vs 5.5.38.

And this prevents 5.4.29 from running because?

You really need to get this bug about "Microsoft support" out of your
system.

You go ahead bothering them about the README of an outdated version that you
suggested.

There is nothing to admit as the opposite was not claimed.

No, but it will be harder to get as time passes. It is not logical that
Microsoft would provide the Windows XP Service Pack 3 download indefinitely
now that they have discontinued Windows XP Service Pack 3 support, which
they BTW announced more than a year ago (because Service Pack 3 is that
old).

And the security vulnerabilities in Service Pack 3 will not be fixed.

> And this prevents 5.4.29 from running because?

It does not prevent PHP 5.4.29 from running, but it makes running PHP 5.4.27
as in XAMPP 1.8.2 a liability:

<https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2014-0237>
<https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2014-0238>

And XAMPP 1.8.3 contains PHP 5.5.x which does not support Windows XP.

It might be possible to install the old XAMPP version on Windows XP and
upgrade PHP and all other outdated parts to a working setup. But if you can
do that you do not need XAMPP in the first place, yes?

You really need to get a minimum clue, especially about computer security.

Some outdated version which was released while MS-Windows-XP was still
supported by Microsoft. This version will most likely have other
security related issues, there been a few nasty ones in old versions of
PHP, MySQL and Apache.

I would recommend you to do as Jerry already said, upgrade, you have
plenty of options at distrowatch.com if you don't want to spend money on
buying a new version of microsoft product.

Just to be clear, you are saying tha there are nasty security related
issues in two-month-old versions of PHP, MySQL, and Apache?

Just to be clear, you are saying that you have an XAMPP installation
using current version of the included components that works on Windows
XP?

Yes, and I second that at least for PHP. See my other answer.

You have only come up with examples from PHP and those were fixed in a
release that runs on XP so what is your point other than the one on your
ears?

I have answered your question. There *are* “nasty security related issues
in two-month-old versions of PHP”, particularly in the PHP version that is
contained in the XAMPP version that you suggested (1.8.2).

And the next XAMPP version (1.8.3) contains a PHP version that does not
support Windows XP anymore, confirmed by your own observations in
<news:MPG.2e14770caf8edcad98a7a0@news.newsguy.com>.

So, what is *your* point?

It appears that with 1.8.3 XAMPP went to the Visual C++ 2013 runtime
that does not work with XP. 1.8.2 uses the Visual C++ 2008 runtime
which should work fine with XP.

1.8.2 and 1.8.3 both use Apache 2.4.9 but 1.8.2 uses MySQL 5.5 vs 5.6 in
1.8.3 and PHP 5.4 vs 5.5.
