#9159 — Access 2000 Developer Edition?

SubjectAccess 2000 Developer Edition?
Message-ID<0no8i918k7aufao806intvft1mhrku3bt3@4ax.com>
I'm running Access 2000, and I'd like to be able to
distribute a database "application" I built to a few family
members.

Is it still possible to get the developer's whatever for
Access 2000?

Not from Microsoft, but there are unsold, unopened, unused copies of many
versions of most software _somewhere_. The problem is finding them
available from a reliable source. Just today, at my computer users group
meeting, one of my colleagues was describing someone who came to him with a
computer loaded with Microsoft software purchased via an online auction
which turned out to be 'bogus', pirated, and unable to be registered.
Fortunately for the person, with a lot of effort, he got his money back,
reported the piracy to Microsoft and Microsoft sent him a free, licensed
copy of the same software.

On the other hand, I've talked to people who've purchased software from
eBay, were careful to demand unused, unopened, unregistered software with
the original key, and had a good experience. I had a personal acquaintance
who wanted a Developer Edition of Office 97, and found one that was 'new,
unused', but had to pay a premium price (in Access 2000 days, before the SPs
that resolved A2000's issues).

I've recently seen some copies of Access 2003 advertised on eBay, but no
"runtime" noted. Perhaps you could get each of them a copy of Access 2003
for a reasonable price -- that should run your Access 2000 database.

If you can find, local to you, a dealer who resells back versions (and has a
good reputation), that would likely be the best source; if anything goes
wrong, you know who to go to get the issue addressed. There once were
several in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but I haven't done any business with
any of them in 20+ years.

Flash of memory: Computer's Worth, http://www.computersworth.com/. As I
said, it's been about 20 years since I did any business with them, but when
I did, they were seamless transactions transactions when I did (several in
person at computer swap meets, and one by phone).

But, take a look at
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/474b62c6-a9f7-404f-84b2-dd0d1ee4aa01/switching-to-access-2010-to-handle-all-versions-of-access-applications?forum=officesetupdeployprevious
to see if the free-for-the-download Access 2010 runtime will handle your
Access 2000 databases. I have some recollection of hearing that the (also
free for the download) Access 2007 runtime will run some earlier versions,
but I don't have a reference. If you can use one of those, it'll certainly
be the least expensive alternative.

The folks at FMS, Inc. (a noted seller of Access software, etc.) have a page
summarizing use of runtimes, and it appears that you'll need to convert your
database to v 2003 (should not be a problem -- I've never encountered a
problem with 2000 -> 2003), then get Office Developer Extensions for Office
2003, and download and use the runtime that matches the Office installed on
the user's system (if you use Spell Check, for instance).

    http://www.fmsinc.com/MicrosoftAccess/runtime/index.htm

Thanks to Luke Chung and his colleagues at FMS for gathering and posting the
information.

More on running older verson Access databases under Access 2007, 2010, or
2013 runtimes. Access MVP Paul Baldy told me that he'd tried a couple of
Access 2000 databases and didn't have problems, but he didn't suggest that
_every_ Access 2000 would.

Well, after all the wonderfull info you've come up with
here, I am persistently confused.

I've seen a few websites that offer some sort of application
built with Access 2000, and they say that if you don't have
Access 2000 installed, you'll have to download the free
Access 2000 runtime, and install that first.

Does that mean that if I send my family photos database,
built with Access 2000, to my sister, who doesn't have
Access installed at all, that she could install the Access
2000 Runtime, and then be able to use (view) the family
photos database?

I rummaged thru my old software CDs, and found the ART2000,
apparently downloaded from Microsoft a number of years ago.

Thanks for all your kind help.

What I concluded from my investigations and a discussion in a private
newsgroup is (if you use some features such as the spell checker) you should
try to run it under the runtime that matches the version of Office loaded on
the user's computer.

Hi Croy
I have a very large database (about 20.000 fields and lots of VBA code).
It is originally developed in Access 2000 and now maintained with Access
2003. In the beginning it was distributed with the expensive Access 2000
runtime version, which also was tricky to install. However, it runs
flawlesly with all later free runtime-version, and is presently distributed
with MS Access 2010 runtime, and no users have complained.
Since each field represent a photo in .jpg format the database is now more
than 8GB so I have to distribute on an USB-stick including the 2010
runtime-software and it works without problems.

Thanks, it is good to have confirmation from someone who's actually 'been
