I was told no-one uses these newsgrou= >ps anymore. Why not ? Most Usenet nodes have switched to using Universal Compression for news, which was dramatically reduced bandwidth costs. But on the receiving end, the decompressor turns out to be really slow and, well, error prone. So a lot of messages are lost, and we only see the few that slip through in uncompressed or LZ formats.
