Iy might also help to avoid confusion if one reserved "male" and
"female" for sex, and "mascultine"{, "feminine" and possibly other
descriptive terms for gender.
It would then be clearer if one spoke of masculine or feminine males
rather than male or female males.

Well this digitization was the epitome of traditional etiquette! Honorifics like "Sir" or "Ma'am" were used to show respect based on observed sex. Acknowledging someone's gender instantly was seen as a sign of attentiveness and social competence. Historically, asking someone how they wished to be "read" would imply their appearance was ambiguous, confusing, or unconventional. In past eras, this was frequently interpreted as an insult to their presentation or dignity. In the same times, doctors /did/ use more elaborate classification schemes all along, such as CID 7455 including eleven possibilities, "Male", "Female", "Hermaphrodite", "Male Pseudohermaphrodite", "Female Pseudohermaphrodite", "Male changed to Female", "Female changed to Male", "Unknown sex", "Ambiguous sex", "Other sex", and "Undetermined sex".

Not because I have any objections to Ms Rowling's political views, but because the genre doesn't interest me. Nor have I read any of her books written as Robert Galbraith. Not because of anything other than other books have caught my attention and interest. I have watched a TV show based one of them: "Strike". The fact that some group urges people to boycott an author would not affect my reading interest either positively or negatively. I think that a boycott effort can prompt more interest in something because it exposes people to someone or something they hadn't been aware of before. In fact, a boycott movement could produce more interest than a movement to promote the author.

'Strike' is a series based on the books, with a variable number of episodes/book. (19 episodes so far, in 6 series, based on the first 6 books) Book 7 is in preparation. As for the paper books, #9 is being written, date of appearance unknown as yet. (possibly early fall) The title will be: Sleep Tight, Evangeline Book #10 is planned to be the last. The TV episodes have a distinct character of their own, and have been compared to 'Morse' for atmosphere. Rowling is one of the executive producers. > The fact that some group urges people to boycott an author would not > affect my reading interest either positively or negatively. > > I think that a boycott effort can prompt more interest in something > because it exposes people to someone or something they hadn't been > aware of before. HBO Max is available in Europe as well, at ~6 euro/month. BTW, Rowling is in the habit of throwing clues around on X. One of the new clues looks like an aligator. (blunt snout, not a croc) They may come near to you, Jan (or she may be misleading again)

[...] I read the first four in French as stepping stones in learning, and I have two of them as audio books (superbly read by Bernard Giraudeau), which I listened to as I read. The adult learner has a problem. Most material of intermediate difficulty is for young children and uninteresting to adults, and these were much better. The essential idea, marrying sorcery with the public-school tale, is one of those clever and obvious ones of which one asks: why did no-one think of that before? The incidents and devices I found sometimes a bit silly (a train's worth of kids running at the barrier at Kings Cross without attracting attention?), sometimes pleasing (la Carte du Maraudeur, for instance, whatever that is in English… - just don't ask about the physics).

Public-school stories were popular. Billy Bunter was never my thing, but I had a volume of Jennings stories that I remember fondly, and I recall reading others, though the names of the characters escape me.

It may surprise you, but Billy Bunter (translated as Billie Turf) was hugely popular in the Netherlands and Belgium in comic format. There are even three Belgian movies featuring him. (~1980) This despite the fact that the whole Greyfriars universe was completely foreign to late 20th century Dutch/Belgian kiddies. But I was thinking of Enid Blyton in particular as boring, Jan

Indeed, but that one percent was very important for the upkeep of the British class system. (perhaps still is) So a much larger percentage for the upper classes. As for different worlds: 'kostscholen' are rare indeed, for special cases such parents in the shipping business. Wikipedia (dutch) even says that the word primarily occurs in translations of English literature. But I wasn't commenting on those aspects in particular. I think it is a nice example of how flexible children are. They easily pick up entirely different universes, where the rules of life are quite different, and easily learn to pick up those different rules, and the different forms of humour that apply, Jan

It seems that most boarding schools also accept day pupils, so the boarders aren't as isolated as they are at, say, Hogwarts. They're still remote from their families, of course. <https://www.schoolsmith.co.uk/boarding-schools/> I think the secondary school I attended was unusual. It was a country comprehensive with about 600 pupils, but had a boarding element inherited from the previous grammar school. The boarders were mostly Services children. They were beneficial because they swelled the numbers in the Sixth Form and enabled a greater range of A-Level courses than one might expect in such a small school. I see the boarding houses (boys' and girls') closed some years ago.

I have the impression (not confirmed) that today they are much more numerous. As for girls, there were none in the 1950s or the preceding 400 years, but they are much in evidence today. > I see the boarding houses (boys' and girls') closed some years ago. > -- athel Living in Marseilles for 39 years; mainly in England before that, with long periods in Singapore, California, Chile and Canada

I was naturally confused by "the Remove". The evidence suggested that it was a separate section of the school where troublemakers could be isolated from the other pupils. -- Peter Moylan peter@pmoylan.org http://www.pmoylan.org Newcastle, NSW
