I think not. The magic roundabout provides a fair bit of redundancy, allows more than one path between entry and exit. Heavy traffic, a breakdown, or road works could close part of it and it would still function. It also allows U-turns and oversized loads can pass through it easily. Whatever its other merits, the Dutch design is inferior in these respects - quite clever, I suppose, but a cleverness too far. The two approaches are not at all the same. > The point of it is that the merging of trafic is mostly done downstream > rather than on the roundabout itself,

(you can take the fast path as intended, or the slower path along the outside) You can recover when you make a mistake. As for clever, the point is not being clever but having a higher throughput and a lower accident rate. (both verifiable and verified) Even the Americans have some, by now. > The two approaches are not at all the same. No, of course not! The magic roundabout is an experimental, and by now obsolete design from over fifty years ago. It works only because it forces drivers to take it slowly. The turbo-roundabout is an evolved design based on some decades of experience with roundabouts, Jan (yes, it may take some getting used to)

Well perhaps I have misunderstood. Let's see… "A traditional Dutch turbo roundabout has a multilane design that uses a radial approach and *discourages lane changing* on the approach and within the roundabout through robust channelization, center island geometry, and lanes that are separated by raised lane dividers" - <https://international.fhwa.dot.gov/programs/tbp/docs/35976_FHWA_HPIP_Turbo_Roundabout_Factsheet_v05_Release_508.pdf> My emphasis. "The lane arrangement of a turbo roundabout *prohibits vehicles that enter on some approaches from completing U-turns*. [...] For instance, vehicles entering from the inside lane of the left and right approaches (the major road approaches) in figure 9 (a “Basic” turbo roundabout) can complete a U-turn; while vehicles approaching from the top and bottom approaches (the minor road approaches) cannot" - <https://www.ms2soft.com/media/1555/fhwa_turbo_roundabouts_2020.pdf> Drivers commonly go all the way round a roundabout when uncertain which exit to take. The British Highway Code mentions this only indirectly, in Rule 186, the French one explicitly: « Vous pouvez emprunter la voie extérieure dans le rond-point si vous n'êtes par sûr de votre direction… » - Cdlr 2022 (p.39), Michelin. > As for clever, the point is not being clever > but having a higher throughput and a lower accident rate. > (both verifiable and verified) > Even the Americans have some, by now. > >> The two approaches are not at all the same. > > No, of course not! > The magic roundabout is an experimental, > and by now obsolete design from over fifty years ago. > It works only because it forces drivers to take it slowly. > The turbo-roundabout is an evolved design > based on some decades of experience with roundabouts, "… however, the roundabout provides a better throughput of traffic than other designs and has an excellent safety record, since traffic moves too slowly to do serious damage in the event of a collision" - <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Roundabout_(Swindon)> I can see turbo roundabouts having a place in linking roads out in the sticks, where it's a simple matter of M6 north or M6 south. In a complex urban setting, as in Swindon, the magic roundabout looks a better solution. (In the course of this rather roundabout discussion, I've defrosted a bit, may even have developed some warmth towards it.)

Turbo roundabouts look to me like arrangements of slip roads, twisted into a circle. They restrict connectivity, which would indeed increase flow and safety - at the expense of flexibility. I think they're multi-level junctions' twisted cousins. It's hard to think of an arrangement that is more connected and flexible than a magic roundabout. In a discussion about safety on two wheels, a cycling friend once put it to me that the chance of having an accident is a function of the number of interactions one has with other vehicles. A cyclist has many such interactions; a motorcyclist, embedded in a stream of other motor traffic, doesn't. If this were all, motorcycling would be safer than cycling, but there are other factors, such as testosterone and speed. Are there any bikers who have never filtered or who, if their machine is capable of it, have never done a ton?

At the opposite extreme, filtering through stationary traffic where the lanes are wide, e.g. on a motorway, is fairly safe. In slow traffic, filtering is legal in the UK. It's mentioned in Rule 88 of the Highway Code, which is tacit approval.

There are generally physical clues as to where the line is. I used to frequently pass from Oregon into Washington (I lived in suburbs on the south side of town, and the border was on the north side. I did not have a driver's handbook for Washington, and had no problems. Currently I am involved in treks into Arizona ... that border is 4 hours away by freeway, but a lot of SoCal people are on that road. Haven't run across any particular issue. Most states buy into the Uniform Traffic Code, whose content is negotiated between the Feds and said states. Differences often are related to what types of vehicles are allowed, special parking zones,, turns in certain situations, and some special signage. Of these states I'm familiar with, I believe Oregon is the only one that allows "triples" ... a semi truck rig with a tractor and 3 trailers. I'm not sure that 50-ft trailers are allowed in that configuration, but haven't looked it up recently. What's fun is trying to pass a triple on a rainy day. Oregon gets plenty of rain. /dps -- potstickers, Japanese gyoza, Chinese dumplings, let's do it
