It's hard to tell, because at present we are faced with a combination of
the two. There is an urgent need to equip AIs with something equivalent
to the first two laws of robotics, but people who want to put in
safeguards are being blocked by an incredibly stupid US president.

When Albert Einstein builted the atomic bomb he didn't have any
safeguards...

just drop the thing.

kill them all!

You see, what THEY won't tell you..
Albert Einstein didn't believe human beings had any souls.

Hmm, for once I find myself in agreement with the Drumph.

To be clear, he is not blocking safeguards. He is saying slowing done AI
development is not a good idea. He is correct in saying that, because if
the competition (China, Russia) does not conform to those guidelines,
they will end up with far more potent and aggressive AIs than those of
OpenAI and Anthropic.

Have you read Neal Stepheson's cyberpunk novels 'Snow Crash' and
'Cryptonomicon'? In there human agents don headgear and penetrate enemy
cyber-defences, a bit like (virtual) fighter pilots navigating a war
zone. Considering the novels were written in the 1990s - well before
current AI developments - they are quite visionary.

Much less dangerous than artificial stupidity.
Most people recognise real stupidity, but a lot of people don't
recognise artificial stupidity or even think AI must be cleverer in ways
they cannot fathom.

That's the joke about God's profession as creator of personkind. An
artist? (the beauty of it all!) An architect? (monumental!) A civil
engineer of course: who else is capable of laying the waste disposal
systems through and along the leisure/pleasure areas?

On the other hand, consider the following examples of intelligent design.

1. Our arms are exactly long enough to reach our genitals.

2. A well-formed turd is the same size and shape as an erect penis.

This gives some insight into the thinking of the designer.
