The Leap v. of OpenSuse 15 has 3 live versions available, KDE, Gnome, & XFCE (called rescue)*. I can successfully boot the XFCE, but neither of the KDE or Gnome because of what I'm guessing is a graphics problem. I have successfully booted each of them once in the default mode, but subsequently and w/ a variety of modified boot parameters, I can't boot either again. The hardware in question is 8G ram and the vid is Radeon HD 4200 and such as Kub 19.04 loads the radeon driver. I considered conversing in the opensuse forum but the registration requires too much personal info (reg to opensuse, suse, novell, NetIQ, PartnerNet); one reg portal I 'accidentally' came across was reasonable requesting only an email, but now I can't find that one again. When the boot fails it ends at OK 'started x display manager' and there are a couple of minor failures before that involving systemd; locale service, postfix mail transport agent, and hostname service. There is also an 'error error' about 'no UMS in radeon module' which I once tho't was important but now disregard as not being *useful*. * found here https://software.opensuse.org/distributions/leap -- Mike Easter

In case anyone is likely to do that forum: Good reg page: https://www.microfocus.com/selfreg/jsp/createOpenSuseAccount.jsp?login=Sign+up Bad reg page is when the register process link goes to suse instead. https://www.suse.com/selfreg/jsp/createAccount.jsp The whole behavior is very dependent upon cookie management, which is somewhat of a mess. -- Mike Easter

Er... why not post on the alt.os.linux.suse group?
openSUSE Leap comes in versions 42.3, 15.0 and 15.1 Beta. There is no
version 15.

I don't remember the URL, but I can ask for you.
Try this route. Go to:
<https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/index.cgi>
Click on login, then on create account. It requires first/last names,
company (tick no company), country and email address. The rest is
login/password.
If you registered previously, just use the recover password link
associated with your mail address. Don't try to register again, that
would need a human to recover from that situation.
The registration for all openSUSE services works on any of the services
and "companies", it is a single verification. They ask for more detail
on the business page.

Well, knowing exact details is important. But for this type of problems
I would recommend the Install/Boot/Login forum.
By the way, I just tried the registration form at the forum, and it only
asks for name and email. And country. I don't see that as intrusive? The
old one asked for postal address and much more.

If you want to use the mail list, try opensuse@opensuse.org.
Alternatively opensuse-support@opensuse.org.
I suggested the forum because it has one forum dedicated to boot and
installation problems, and has more traffic than the mail lists currently.

It isn't. 4 messages this month, 21 past month. You are probably looking
at alt.os.linux.opensuse instead.
Yes, the correct group should be the opensuse one, but people use the
suse one instead. That can't be helped.

Nope. The business version, SLE, is called 15, and has service packs 0,
1... Leap instead has versions 15.0, 15.1, ... etc.

They are very knowledgeable, trust me :-)

Me thinks the same :-)
There is an nntp gateway for the forum, if you want to use it. But it
has its own nuances.
Otherwise, there is also a bunch of mail lists. You can find me there,
not on the forum.

Some distros used to have some sort of test/verify that
the media was good. Is there still one of those available,
before re-writing the USB stick and trying to fix it ?
It was based on a hash per major file on the media.
Likely one for the squashfs and so on.

The opensuse live boot menu has a media check, but I'm not sure exactly what it does. I'm running it on the bad usb. It is loading some kind of linux. It looks like it gives a report on the md5 of the .iso that was written to the USB. There's nothing wrong there. At the end of that process it stops at the common boot failure text which says: Welcome to openSUSE Leap 15.0 - Kernel 4.12.14 etc default (tty1) localhost login: I'm going to do that again; an important screen exited itself too quickly for me. -- Mike Easter

That media check doesn't solve the problem of determining if there is something wrong w/ the USB. The .iso had also been checked before I wrote it to the USB. Maybe I don't understand correctly what happens when a USB is 'acting up' like this. I'm going to use some other tools to look at it. Some are non-destructive. -- Mike Easter

It only works on CDs. If it runs it will always say it is a bad CD or
similar, unless they got around to solve the check for USB case.
On CDs, it does a checksum test.

The entry on the boot menu to verify media. We are talking about it all
