Unlike Windows, the vast makority of Linux servers are intended to run
ehtirely headless.

Making a "server edition" that ships with a DE, however light, is such a
small usecase, we might as well call it zero.

Also, theres nothing stopping you from using a remote X Server, such as
your workstation. IIRC, you need to enable X Forwarding in
/etc/sshd.conf ... but once you do (and restart sshd), you should be
good. Just (re)connect using ssh -Y .

There is also nothing to stop you installing a desktop environment after
doing the initial install from a server ISO, or installing whatever
server packages you wanted after installing from a desktop ISO. The
distinctions here are rather arbitrary.

Indeed, or using a "Desktop" distro for a server.

Ultimately, the distinction is "comes with a DE preinstalled" (or not).
And, by extension, burning CPU cycles on an unused DE (or not).

Won't work. Not the same architectures (x86/ARM).

Debian does not have desktop/server editions.

Another strategy for getting a Ub server installed to bootable USB is to
install it to a VM and clone the VM to the USB and then make the USB
bootable.

7 years old https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1904557
[SOLVED] Ubuntu in Virtual Box and now want to clone to bootable USB

Process Overview:
1. Main system is Windows (or whatever)
2. Create a VM using VirtualBox
3. Install Ubuntu 11.04 into a VirtualBox VM
4. Set up the installed ubuntu the way we want (settings/programs)
5. Prepare the USB Drive
6. Clone the ubuntu install to a USB drive
7. Make the USB drive bootable

This is a lengthy but educational article:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/16988/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-to-a-usb-key-without-using-startup-disk-creator#942312

It starts 8 years ago, but there are recent contributions.
