#39074 — Which Distribution is Best For Screencasting?

SubjectWhich Distribution is Best For Screencasting?
Message-ID<27bbubtia3vg90atd2rp0l07frf34d0183@4ax.com>
I do a lot of screencasting work where I record myself performing
basic tasks in Linux and incorporate them into lessons that I use to
teach my students about Linux. I am currently using LinuxMint with the
Mate desktop and I am having problems finding a decent screencasting
program. The best I have found is RecordMyDesktop and Instanbul both
of which are unstable and don't offer the same feature set as Camtasia
on my Mac. I of course can run Linux in a VM and capture that way but
I do get artifacts at times plus I prefer running a bare hardware
version of Linux.

It was suggested to me that Gentoo or Ubuntu might serve me well.
Is one better than the other?
Is there another alternative I am not aware of?
I am willing to go commercial and pay for the software as long as I am
getting a quality product.

Thank you in advance for any and all advice.

Based upon what criteria?
His question seems genuine to me.

My advice would be choose Ubuntu and make sure to install the
restricted CODECS etc.

Why the hell would Snit do this? Thanks for pointing it out and taking the time to go through point by point where he screwed up and you were able to track it to him.

Wait.

FUCK!

You are just trolling!

My advice is to not waste your time because there is nothing in the
Linux world that even comes close to Camtasia. Linux is great if you
need a text editor, it has about 100 of them, but when it comes to
screencasting applications you might as well be asking for Photoshop
or AutoCAD for Linux. They don't exist.

Heck, you have the source code, why not either fix what you are using
or roll your own?
Just kidding.

Hmmm, seems very suspicious... but I will humor you... what features are you
looking for? You mention a package but do not say.

So you're "giving lessons on Linux", and you don't
know what Gentoo is ? How long would it have taken
to look that up ? Find the Gentoo install manual
on the web, then tell us why you think that's
a good idea.

And if you were actually screencasting and giving lessons,
you would have dropped the name of the tool you are
currently using. For... realism.

Here. I'll help you. Pick one at random from here
and put it in your next post.

He is almost certainly one of the COLA "herd" following me here to troll. I
do quite a bit of screencasting and those that troll me there often try to
pull me in with such questions.

Then they blame me for being the sock they used. It is... odd of them. To
say the least.

To be fair there are two gentoos, the OS distro and the file manager:

Really comes down to there are a number of good programs that can record the
screen. Those that troll me in COLA get confused between this and my search
for such a program that ALSO deals with OS / GPU meta-data so you can, in
post production, be able to work with the mouse pointer, keystrokes, and
windows in various ways.

While some on COLA have told me such programs exist, that is hardly a good
source of even low-tech information. I was generous and trusted they might
be right and have asked here and elsewhere. Of course the info I got in COLA
was wrong. So be it. OK, Linux has no such program. Not the end of the
world.

At some point I would love to see such a program be developed for Linux. I
know little of the back end stuff, but I wonder if the replacements for X
will make this easier or more likely. Any thoughts?

I did not want to embarrass you or whatever, but, yes, you are the one who
told me such programs exist on Linux. They do not.

You were wrong. Whatever. It happens and we are all wrong. It is not worth a
multi-year troll-fest from you, and certainly not worth taking it out of
COLA.

You are lying again, as usual
Since then you have introduced new "requirements".

You are the most dishonest lying swine I have ever encountered, Snit Michael
Glasser

*You* have taken it out of cola. And still try to do so

I don't think the distro makes a lot of difference. By way of
application software: Have you tried "vlc" (videlan) "mencoder"
(mplayer), or any of the several vnc based recorders such as
pyvnc2swf?

The main difference between distros is how sysadmin tasks are handled,
avalable software does not differ to the same extent.

Fuck! Why would he do that? The sick thing is how you just go through point by point how you proved where he screwed up and how you proved it was him.

Wait. FUCK!

You are just trolling.
