My wife is now using Mint Cinnamon on a ten year old iMac with a dead hard
drive. Or trying to anyway. Good grief.

The machine is an older Mac. OK. But the backlighting is not what it once
was. On OS X we just set the color profile to have a different gamma and it
was very usable. On Mint Cinnamon -- darks are very dark and hard to use,
even at full brightness. Looking in preferences I see no good way to change
the gamma for the screen.

Then she went to print something from Chrome (a recipe). Failed. Why? Said
the filter failed. Did not even try to figure out what that means but might
later. I tried to print from the text editor. Worked fine.

The default for opening PDFs was ImageMagic -- which messed up the PDF and
did not print it well. OK, ImageMagic is not the best took for the job. But
setting the default failed.

Recreated much of what we did, talking to my wife -- but the sound did not
turn out (could be I missed a setting?) so I added sound over the video.

Would love to have my wife have a better experience with Linux but this,
sadly, was not it. Any suggestions on how to improve this?

Infer that you're booting a live DVD?
Don't know enough about unspecified iMac, but if it's intel based,
I'd try MacPup 5.50 and see how that works.
I've found it to be the best distro for "just works on anything you
throw it at." And you can get persistence on a DVD-RW (or flash drive)
without
jumping thru any hoops.
It runs in RAM and only writes to the flash (or CD/DVD-RW) when you shut
down.

Support for any hardware-specifics is too much to ask. Only hope is
that some frustrated MAC user wrote some code and you can actually find
it...and it installs and runs on your specific hardware with your specific
version of your specific distro...and some update didn't bust it.

You've been around long enough to know the score.
Try MacPup 5.50. If that don't work, just give up.
Even if you find the workaround for the first few issues,
there will be many more issues to come as you bore into
the linux onion of frustration.

No -- installed on a USB Flash drive. The drive is USB 3 but the port is
1.1, and I suspect that I where *some* of the issues come from.

I have re-done some of the same things in a VM on another machine and the
settings of default programs worked fine, as did the printing (though that
goes through the VM drivers).

ImageMagick still messed up the image though. Here:

I went with Mint Cinnamon which may have been a mistake. At the very least I
could have gone with a lower end DE. My wife, though, does not want to
change now... and already has things set up based on Cinnamon.

Does not need to be hardware specific -- just gamma adjustments. I will look
into that more, later.

Sadly I suspect that is going to be how it is. At some point we will get me
a new Mac and she will get my hand-me-down. Not pushing Macs in here, but
she prefers that... and even before the hard drive died her 10 year old
machine was getting a bit old. :)

xrandr
If you run kde, kcmshell4 kgamma
(or kcmshell5 if plasma5)

cups sends files through various filters to convert them from the format
they have to the format that the printer expects.

No idea what "failed" means. Try installing and using xpdf, okular, ...
or install the last acroread that admobe released for Linux.

Using Mint Cinnamon: <https://youtu.be/c8R9y-rsEEc>

The system is old *and* I am running it from a USB 1.1 port! So it is GOING
to be slow. Of course. I also have set the swap to 0...

Might move to Xfce, but so far the user of the system does not want to
change. I should have started with that but am not as familiar with it.

Fair enough... but it does work from other programs.

I ended up posting two posts... one with a link to the video and one not.
Tried to stop the first post and apparently failed (user error!). Here is
the full context: <https://youtu.be/c8R9y-rsEEc>.

Just would not let me change the default. Later tried it on a VM and it
worked fine: <https://youtu.be/96ukNXG-Ymw>.
