#57099 — I Have Found My Editor

From"F. Russell" <fr@random.info>
Date2019-06-22 01:47 +0000
SubjectI Have Found My Editor
Message-ID<qek1ao02uca@news1.newsguy.com>
Being a long time user of the Cooledit text editor I long
realized that, in spite of its minor shortcomings, there
was nothing better.

But now I've found something that actually surpasses Cooledit:
Geany.

Geany is now my text editor of choice, although I still would
like to see Cooledit brought up to "modern" standards.

Other text editors are either dinosaurs that refuse to die,
like vim, emacs, joe, etc., or that are entangled in the bloated
nonsense of a DE, like gedit.

However, Geany and Cooledit achieve that perfect balance of modernism
and minimalism while yet expressing comprehensive power.

Yes, I've been using geany for quite a while.
I would like to see an editor that does find&replace only in certain columns.
I don't know any FOSS editor that does so.

There are editors that do search/replace inside a block; thus you can
select the column in a block, on those editors that support that.

Vim can do it.
After visually selecting a block:
:%s/\%Vxxx/yyy/g
There is a vim plugin for geany that may or may not work.

Nevermind about the vim plugin.

block visual mode is not implemented - probably possible using
Scintilla's multiple selection feature.

I think he means S&R within a selected column block.
Not all text editor have this feature. Geany has.

Emacs can certainly do that. Just select your block and apply whatever
operations you wish to it.

The concept of a "column" does not apply to a text file.

Therefore, find & replace tools for "columns" would very
understandably not be available.

Must I always have to repeat the obvious?

The concept of a "column" does not apply to a text file.
A text file is composed of "lines" with each line separated
by, guess what, an end of line (EOL) character.

That's all there is. Nothing more.

You may wish to establish columns in some fashion but you
will be entirely on your own. The rest of the world won't
know what you are doing.

You are venturing into territory known as "rich text format"
(RTF) which is not nearly the same as text.

So if you want columns, or formatting, or italics, etc.
then go with RTF and an RTF editor:

Character positions within a line constitute natural columns, blockhead.
But chosing a delimiter makes things a bit more useful.

Assuming fixed pitch. Which, of course we obviously are or we wouldn't
be talking about columns of characters.

Note that "column" in this context could also refer to the columns of
text in a multicolumn format as in newspapers.

We are all assuming fixed pitch since post number 1.

Which can be done in plain text. Rare, but possible, if the editor is
capable. You see tables in readme files, and tables are a form of
columns. I have written columns in plain text sometimes, and it was very
awkward because my editor did not support it.

Might as well use a spreadsheet to keep things where you want them and
make them accessible.

not completely true.
Both in win/office and in linux/LbO or Oo

newlines (\n) / CR (\r) are "major" parsing items
but tabular form is supported by "minor" parsing items,
like "\t" (TAB) character

most editors of high level supporting tables, and not using
interlally pure ascii, can still parse TAB delimited plain
text, and they also place in selections/clipboard ascii
representation of the internal data using TABs
I had to use this a lot of time, as I write docs with high
level editors, but often have to submit some "true" tables
to basic progarms to calculations, and they "see" the
selection/clipboard as TAB separated fields (columns) and LF
separated rows handy to be split by native array functions,
nested.

TAB are the default vertical parsing items independently of
the fixed field size used in the (ASTONISHING !) example of OWL.
A visually impressive example like that is still possible
using non proportional fonts and padding with other blanks
(spaces, dots or else) with no particular control meaning to
editors.
I found TAB useful as the information don't go lost even
during multiple editors of low / high level (provided one,
expecially in CODE editors, do not enable some special
options for indentation like replace tabs with spaces or so).

>
> You are venturing into territory known as "rich text format"

but TAB is a character supported by every editor, even
mousepad and leafpad

in CODE oriented editors TABS acquire another meaning :
indent (I met scintilla using OpenSCAD)

>
> So if you want columns, or formatting, or italics, etc.

surely more handy, but in need also padding with blanks and
use of fixed size fonts is reasonable. Expecially in
"sprintf / printf" generated output give good looking pure ascii

Try it on this text file:

[#] cat birdbrain.txt
Here cometh a bunch of ersatz columns.

They contain silly "ooo" content.

Here they be:

|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||ooo|||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||ooo||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| ||||ooo||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||ooo|||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||

|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||ooo|||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||ooo||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||

This ends the "ooo" silly column nonsense.

Now accept text as the limited format which it is.

Result:

[#] sed -e 's/\(.* .* .* .*\)\(ooo\)\(.* .*\)/\1XXX\3/g' birdbrain.txt

Here cometh a bunch of ersatz columns.

They contain silly "XXX" content.

Here they be:
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||ooo|||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||XXX||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| ||||ooo||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||ooo|||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| ||||ooo||| |||||||||| ||||XXX||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||ooo|||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||XXX||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||
|||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| |||||||||| ||||||||||

This ends the "XXX" silly column nonsense.

Now accept text as the limited format which it is.

Oops! It appears that the concept of a column has been
erroneously to non-column areas.

Nope. It worked correctly. Columns with a given delimiter
need not line up visually. In fact, not forcing columns to
line up gives you much greater flexibility.
