HP Pavilion 15-ab257-nr Laptop A local store has this HP laptop for sale at a price of $549US at the moment. 15.6-inch screen, 12GB RAM, 1TB hard drive. <http://www.bjs.com/hp-pavilion-15-ab257-nr-laptop-intel-core-i5-5200u- processor.product.286008#> Question: does anyone know if it will be possible to expunge the Windows 10 and replace it with an Ubuntu - preferably an LTS such as Mint or Xubuntu? Any other comments or experience with the model? I found one page at ubuntu.com in a search but the page refuses to load. -- -bts

I'll study that in a bit. The wife wants to go over to this store tomorrow so I think I will tag along and have a closer look at the computer. I'll take along a LiveCD and if no employees are watching, see what happens. Thanks for your reply. -- -bts

You might have to go through this.
"HP Notebook PCs - Cannot Start Notebook Computer From a Bootable CD or DVD"
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054
On modern computers, even if the disk is below 1TB, they still use
GPT for the Windows pre-installed OS. And to make that work,
UEFI is the perfect combination.
However, it's the Secure Boot that counts. And that's what
the link above covers, for a Pavilion 15. It's not the exact
same model, but it may share some of the characteristics.

I may not get to that store today .. it started snowing fairly heavy just before dawn, and travel may become a problem. :-( I see the place also has a Lenovo laptop with a 17-inch screen and otherwise similar specs to the HP Pavilion, for just a few dollars more. -- -bts

There have been some stupidities by Lenovo re. what could be considered spyware but that's as usual limited to Windows. Otherwise they are solid and well build, like contrary to some HP's they don't suffer overheating.

But I purposely got one with Win7 to avoid the "secure" boot nonsense. Only complaint is with the new Lenovo keyboards they removed the CapsLock, ScrollLock, and NumLock lights! Not a problem in GUI to install the indicator, but when working in sessions without GUI accidentally hitting the CapsLock while entering a password can be down right confusing!!!! Really stupid Lenovo! How much did you save for a lousy LED? -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com

How much did you save for a lousy LED? Yes, my T450 is the same. What brain-dead moron decided it was a good idea to remove the light indicator from caps-lock... Well, I don't often hit it by mistake and it is obvious when I do because everything is upper case all of the sudden. But I'm a little mad at Lenovo for such things. One other note on Lenovo. When you are buying one make sure you get it with an IPS panel. Otherwise their screens tend to suck. Seriously considering replacing the screen. Don't know why they don't just use IPS on all their machines. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

My problem is they did not have "keyboarding" when I went to school, and typing was reserved for the business/technical, non-college-bound, track for girls...never learned to touch type. hen-pecked for so long I cannot seem to learn now. :-( > > One other note on Lenovo. I actually did learn to type when I was 9 years old but it was on a Royal and when I was exposed to computers I just started to peck on the keys because I was trying to learn a little basic and basic was too weird to type it. So I got into the habit of pecking. And now I am the fastest pecking typist you've ever seen. Often I can peck without looking if I am really familiar with the keyboard. It's kind of strange, but I'm not terrible slow at the keyboard despite my pecking. My big problem is I think faster than I type and am prone to skip a word I think when typing. It's like I am thinking out loud what I want to type and if I can't keep up with myself I tend to skip words. I also say things like does when I mean doesn't or can when I mean can't. And it drives me crazy. If I would just learn to type then I could watch the text 100% of the time instead of 60% or the time and it would cut down on errors and typos, which as I am absolutely you've come to know all too well come from me. You seem to do pretty well despite being a pecking typist. You'd think I'd have learned by now. I've been on keyboard since before I was ten and I am almost fifty now. On the plus side I know plenty of people with injuries because they type and get into that whole typing position. Since I have no position to get into I have no injury either. And I like that, so I tend to stick to what I do because it seems to work well enough. >> One other note on Lenovo. When you are buying one make sure you get it >> with an IPS panel. I too prefer matte, and I tend to buy the 15.6" screens but I'm ready to go bigger. Maybe I can make you a deal on my M4800 if I decide to bight the bullet and get the M6800. I guess I better decide soon. Looks like the 6800 I'm lusting after is going bye-bye... They are replacing them with a new 7000 series which sounds good on paper but I like the classic look of the M6800 with the red covert metal backing. I should have gone that route in the first place but was afraid it was too darn big. Turns out my M4800 and the M6800 are almost the same physical foot print. Oh well. I can never seem to be happy with a laptop no matter what I do. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

My own (rather worse) problem is thick and wide fingers that sometimes hit three keys at once. Those fingers still think that they did the right thing but come up with things (I can't call them words) such as, "tyhnnjse," when typing, "the." Cybe R. That's a good policy. Some of these 17" laptops are really just desktop replacements as they are so powerful. I like that they don't take up a whole lot of space and no wires all over. But for that to work you'll have to get pretty darn comfortable with the display. I notice that AlienWare now has an 18" !! -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny
