This morning I accepted the update for kernel 6.8.0-86-generic.
When I booted up, I had lost my primary screen.

I worked back to kernel 6.8.0-84 and got it back.

BUt the drivers for my TBS 6281 DVB-T2 TV card no longer worked and had to be recompliled.
Would they? No.

ChatGPT hAd been running me ragged this evening overv this when up popped kernel 6.8.0-87-generic.
Are we we thought (ChstGPT and me). That is probably a clean-up version.
Well no it isn't.

I am not going to install further kernels until whatever.

How exactly do you do that? I dread it happening to me one day.

First check that you've still got a copy of the old kernel installed:
Update Manager | View | Linux kernels | (Continue).

To boot into an earlier installed kernel (from
<https://www.siberoloji.com/how-to-manage-kernels-on-linux-mint/>)
1. Restart your computer.
2. Hold the Shift key during boot to access the GRUB menu.
3. Select Advanced options for Linux Mint.
4. Choose the older kernel version from the list.

I've done it a couple of times a few years ago and it went without problem.

In response to everyone that replied.
I used a hybrid of what I had been doing and ChatGPTs advice and successfully compiled the TBS drivers for kernel 6.8.0-84-generic.

However when ran up MythTV Frontend it told me my schema was one level out and worse it kept restarting every time I closed it. I only want to use it with my remote backend. Both server and client are using MythTV version 35! This problem will be ongoing for a while.

I have my grub boot menu set to come up every boot (thank goodness). It goes straight into Advanced <something or other> with all the kernels listed. It highlights "84" which is fine but when I select it as often as not it will drop into the grub terminal which I have never found of much use.
If I just select the first option, the default kernel it goes into "87". I will sort that problem out first.

Several reboots later I will get into 6.8.0-84-generic. Trying earlier kernels I get either only one screen (of two) or no network access).

It reminds me of my Windows days. :(

The Mythtv problem was resolved with an update:

https://launchpad.net/~mythbuntu/+archive/ubuntu/35

mythtv 2:35.0+fixes.202511011804.48241b2acd~ubuntu26.04.1 buntu Team (16 hours ago)
is the one I used.

I think something unique to you? maybe?
I did both 86 a week or two ago and then 87 just today. Neither have issues.

Alan (pinnerite) knows what he has to do. A repeat of
the entire recipe followed from the last time the TBS
needs to be built. Make sure the Linux headers are there,
or whatever. He should have notes from the last time we
went through this. It's not simply a matter of "make clean".
I would start a separate folder and do a new TBS.

If the TBS died, perhaps the broken TBS also caused
some DKMS activity to jam up and that's why his video card
did not survive the transition in one piece. Maybe the video
card has switched from binary blob to FOSS driver or something.
I don't know the names of the AMD options all that well, maybe
one of them is "amdgpu" ? I have a machine that runs off AMD iGPU,
but the table for guest PCs is busy right now (with a Linux on it).

just do a timeshift before a kernel update

There should be options in your boot menu to choose from available kernels
to boot with.

You didn’t remove the previous kernel, did you?

yes I saw what Jeff Layman wrote..

I didn't have a problem with the kernel update and have never removed
any kernels.

The poster Pinnerite (Alan) is operational at the moment,
but is working on repairing his setup so the newer
kernel will work. He knows how to recompile the driver
for his TBS brand TV tuner card, but just has to remember
the recipe (using the notes from the last time would help).

I have a VM with a successful build of the driver in it,
from the last time.

It's not a recipe problem as such, it's a matter of picking
a recipe from a couple of them. If you pick up the wrong
recipe off the web, you will encounter "head winds" as you
work on it.

But how do you restore from a timeshift, if the kernel update has disabled

I have my snapshots on a separate drive, and would restore the snapshot
