In that case it probably doesn't matter. You will use probably very expensive software produced for very few people. You first buy the software, then tailor the computer (with the suitable OS they tell you) to it. -- Cheers, Carlos.

That is ridiculous. Competing companies are going join together and start an enterprise to write software specific to their industry needs? Companies whose core business has nothing to do with writing software are going to start some sort of organization to write software? Nonsense. Lost in the weeds among all this talk about system integrators and different text file editors is that the context of this discussion is the question, "why don't people (i.e., companies and organizations) drop Microsoft and use some version of *nix instead?" To which the answer was, and still is, third-party applications, training, and support. What Mr. Clarke seems to understand, and what other participants don't, is that for most businesses, IT is pure overhead. It is something to be avoided if at all possible, and minimized otherwise. A widget manufacturer doesn't want to write widget-related software if there is an ISV with a suitable product they can simply purchase. And they don't have to worry about finding a vendor with such a niche market product that works in their computing environment if that environment is Windows. The chance that an ISV has a Windows version of their product is much greater than the chance that they have a version for any particular *nix. Similarly for training. Said widget manufacturer will have an easier time finding employees that already know how to function in a Windows environment as opposed to finding widget-knowledgeable employees who are familiar with a particular version of *nix. Otherwise they would have to train their new employees in using *nix -- and that's overhead. The argument is much the same for support -- there are simply fewer options, with all the potential downsides that might incur. There's a slightly bigger risk if the system integrator screws up, and it adds nothing to the manufacture of widgets. It used to be a mostly IBM world. Now it's a mostly Microsoft Windows world. Eventually it will change again, but that's where we are now, for better or worse. A widget manufacturer just wants to make widgets. They don't care about being in the software vanguard or sticking it to Microsoft. And that's why people don't drop Microsoft and use some version of *nix instead.

See, for example JAMF for the mac. My company has no problem remotely managing and supporting hundreds of MACbook pros. Such software could easily be made available for a given linux distro were there any demand for it. >Also critical are programs from independent software vendors (ISV). But they are enough for most, particularly since most corporate third-party apps are browers based or brower-enabled (e.g. outlook). We, like many companies, use linux extensively for chip development.

There are GUIs for Linux that closely resemble windows. I use Mate, and I think it’s pretty close. I was never a big “word” user, but I switched from WordPro to LibraOffice without much trouble (or training). Similarly I can, if I have to, use “word” on wife’s windows box on occasion, although I have mostly switched her to Libre. I don't have much trouble opening them in Libre Office. Matter of fact, some friends that had to suddenly work at home because of the virus, found out that the had to produce PDFs from their word documents before distributing them, and it turned out that their version of Office could not. So they sent me the files by email, I did the conversion in LO on Linux, and sent back the PDFs to them. With proof reading :-) Sometimes I had to send them back the files in Word format, edited on LO. :-D -- Cheers, Carlos.
