That's a fair description of IBM's RPG, but I don't think it was ever
true of COBOL.
OK, COBOL was clearly designed around file handling and dealing with
formatted data rather than doing scientific or engineering calculations,
but apart from that its pretty hard to see and inherent limits to the
type and size of jobs it was meant to tackle.
One indication of this is that COBOL has had built-in support for overlay
handling since I first learned it in about 1970, while to the best of my
knowledge this has never been included in the language syntax of C, the
Algols or any languages derived from them.
I'll also accept the argument that COBOL was designed on the, in my view
flawed, assumption that there are a bunch of developers who can
understand logic written in pseudo-English together with all the
implications of MOVEing data between heterogeneous variables but who are
totally incapable of dealing with a block structured language using
pseudo-mathematical notation.

Can't comment: I've never worked with a bunch of pure coders. Trainees,
sure, but that's different.
That said I've also worked with some terrible so-called programmers. T
remember one who didn't understand that, in the absence sentences that
affect control flow, control falls through from one parahraph to the
next. Why else would he write code like this:
PARA-1.
NOTE in-line code here.
GO TO PARA-2.
PARA-2.
NOTE still more inline code.
GO TO PARA-3.
PARA-3.
NOTE .... and so ad infinitum.
And another bod who didn't understand the concept of arithmetical error
handling. He could not be convinced that a computer could do something
sensible with a divide by zero error or result overflow and it was
therefore a badly designed machine if the entire mainframe didn't halt
when this happened. Small wonder that, on a site rife with nicknames, he
was known as 'Brain Cell' because we were certain he only had one.

COBOL (an acronym for COmmon Business-Oriented Language) was designed at a time when computers and computing had just started to expand out of the military (where computing was primarily used to break codes and compute artilery firing solutions) into business. At the time, while the art and science of programming was still developing, the intended users of the language were Accountants and other Financial workers. The COBOL language is the language of an Accountant, describing how (s)he manages ledgers, accounts, payrolls, taxes and the like. A typical use-case would be the accountant describing how to compute how much to charge a customer for a purchase of a number of items: "Multiply the number of items by the per-item cost giving the gross cost. Multiply the gross cost by the taxrate giving the sales tax. Add the sales tax to the gross cost giving the net cost." And, that, in COBOL, would be MULTIPLY NUMBER-OF-ITEMS BY PER-ITEM-COST GIVING GROSS-COST. MULTIPLY GROSS-COST BY TAX-RATE GIVING SALES-TAX. ADD GROSS-COST, SALES-TAX GIVING NET-COST. You see, COBOL wasn't originally designed for scientific calculations or process control or even as a computer-science tool; it was designed for (North American) business, and (North American) business of 1960 spoke, not in formulae or parenthesis, but in English. The COMPUTE verb has been in COBOL at least since I started programming in it in the late 1960s. Although the simple arithmetic you have used above is common, many businesses require statistical, actuarial and financial calculations that would be tedious to program using the basic COBOL verbs you have shown. Current COBOL implementations have most of the intrinsic functions available in other general purpose high level languages. The huge advantage of COBOL for business applications is the support for precise decimal arithmetic and "ON SIZE ERROR" in case it fails.

That's because they have separately compiled procedures (or subroutines or functions) and don't need it. When you link the program, you tell the linker which procedures go in which overlay segment. All of the IBM mainframe languages used the same linker so you could overlay programs written any of them so long as you could tell the compiler to generate separate object modules. I never used IBM mainframe overlays, but in the 1980s I used a MS-DOS linker that worked almost exactly the same way to fold about 800K of C code into the 640K DOS address space.

COBOL started in the era of no OS, where a minimal loader loaded the code into a bare-metal machine, so when it needed more memory than the system had, it had to arrange to bring in the segments needed only as and when they were needed. Early PC DOS was also a very minimal OS, and apps larger than the available memory also had to do their own memory management. This functionality was quickly pushed down into the OS though (long before DOS - DOS was simply miles behind when it launched). This meant that app programmers no longer had to manage their own overlays, as the functionality became handled transparently by the compilers and linkers, and eventually pushed even lower into the OS as OS's got more advanced and made use of improved hardware memory management features. -- Andrew Gabriel [email address is not usable -- followup in the newsgroup]

The only "good" use (besides my aforementioned coroutine case) I'd seen
for the ASSIGNed goto was the output of a preprocessor (for some reason,
the company I was with did not have access to the proprocessor, only the
output files, and had to do maintenance on that).
Input language was a pseudo-C; output was FORTRAN using
ASSIGN 1234 to I001
GOTO 9999
1234 CONTINUE
as a local subroutine call,
9999 stuff
GOTO I001
as the return.
In essence -- thousands of lines of FORTRAN which behaved like BASIC
(all variables global, no arguments on subroutine calls, and nearly
spaghetti)
When I first started maintaining that -- and porting to VAX from PDP...
I ended up putting all the variables into one large common block, and
recoded some 60 subroutine files out of all the ASSIGN/GOTO crud. (That was
for the main program -- it spawned dozens of others on operator command)

I think one could as easily use CALCULATED GOTO for that also. Please, that's COMPUTED GOTO, the predecessor of the C switch statement. Anything you could do with assigned goto, you could do with computed goto. Assign puts the address of the target statement into the variable, computed puts an index into the variable, and it indexes a list of statement numbers in the goto statement.

There are a couple of COMPUTED GOTO's in the FORTRAN IV code for Colossal Cave Adventure... that dispatches the commands to the right section of code. Even BASIC has a form of COMPUTED GOTO, but *not* ASSIGNED GOTO. I guess I chose the ASSIGNED GOTO because I had *never* used it before, and I have *never* used it since. ISTM that ASSIGNED GOTO is *no* longer supported since FORTRAN 90... (It is *not* just depricated... it's *gone*!!!) -- numerist at aquaporin4 dot com

According to my F90 text book, ASSIGN (and related GOTO var) were
declared "obsolescent" in F90, but were still in the language. My F95 book
implies that it was intended to be a small change level, so likely did not
delete obsolescent features.
What is /now/ if Fortran, I don't know -- there have been at least two
releases since F90/95.

While it's true that one _could_ do anything with a computed GOTO that can be done with an assigned GOTO, the assigned GOTO is (potentially) faster for certain purposes. Thus, I used assigned GOTO to branch to different routines to compute different map projections for a program that could draw maps in one of several different projections. In the original FORTRAN - before FORTRAN II added subroutines and functions - assigned GOTO was also useful for returning to sections of a program which functioned as subroutines. John Savard

Fortran provided the same bad idea with assigned GOTOs: >222 ASSIGN 666 TO HELL >666 GO TO HELL,(666,222) >(In most flavors of Fortran the list of statement numbers in the >assigned goto was optional.) Thanks for remembering that. Code reviews took away all the "fun names" for things :-( One version of FORTRAN (perhaps WATFIV) had DUMPLIST: dump specific variables upon ABEND instead of wasting paper with a full core dump. I had the program auto curse-itself upon error with dumplist/oh-shit/i,j,foo,bar,baz But it's all window dressing. C/C++ using a pointer-to-function or reference-to-function is still taking the address of a function/subroutine to CALL/GOSUB/JSR it later. > The original Fortran system didn't have subroutines, > so you faked them with assigned gotos. Oh, that's just disgusting! Unless the calling point was saved, how did you COME-FROM to return back to the calling GOTO? As I commented in an earlier posting, a FORTRAN variant had the 'computed goto', which could kinda, almost implement a SWITCH/CASE, complete with default case and case fall-thru. GOTO (20,30,40,50) i C fall thru here for i<1 or i>4 20 ... got here for i .eq. 1 30 ... got here for i .eq. 2 40 ... got here for i .eq. 3 50 ... got here for i .eq. 4 -- jeffj
