IFLs are cheaper than CPs. If you have the hardware it can make sense to run part of your workload using z/VM and Linux. It’s also easier to find developers for Linux (most won’t even notice they are on s390 and not on amd64). -- Stefan

They'll say just about anything to make a buck. The IBM story is that it's cheaper to run a Z than to run Intel servers with equivalent performance. And I'm sure they can show you a calculation to that effect. But I wonder how long ago it was made. And if it's true why IBM's supers aren't based on the Z.

I could well be wrong but I think it's mainly existing mainframe shops with core applications running on zOS or older wanting to expand into the shiny new world of web applications by adding middleware and front end software that runs under Linux and connects to the core applications by some kind of interface. At the point they decide to dip their toes the easy option is to fire up Linux in a corner of one of their zSystem boxes - that stays the easy option for quite a while before it's worth working out how to support something else without IBM's help. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:\>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

Running under the Unix subsystem doesn't count. It has to run natively and link to the existing IBM compilers.

S/390 Linux runs on zSeries. Gcc's latest supported CPU is z14 https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/S_002f390-and-zSeries-Options.html so it is up with current released architectures. (Given that IBM has a few people working on GCC, that is not surprising).

I have updated the wiki to make this clearer. gcc's platform names are sometimes a bit old-fashioned; for exaple, you will still find POWER named "powerpc", and its machine-dependent files are under the config/rs6000 directory. If you want confirmation of that gfortran works on zSystem, look at https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-testresults/2020-September/590255.html which shows recent testresults of gcc master for a z13. You have to scroll down a bit to see the gfortran test results, which do not look too bad. > I realize that the gcc compilers share back ends but there is still > significant twiddling to get each front end to generate code for each > architecture. As one of the people who would do the twiddling if it were required, I can assure you that it's not. The TREE structures that gfortran passes to the gcc middle end are quite platform-agnostic, with certain assumptions which are fulfilled for all modern machines (such as existence of a 32-bit and a 64-bit integer type and two's complement). There is the occasional platform dependent bug, but that is usually because of endianness issues (typically caught within a day or two by the people running regular regression tests on big-endian POWER8, and quickly resolved), or because some non-Linux or non-x86 system exposes issues where the code generated by gfortran is wrong, but the usual development platforms didn't catch it. (To be honest, there are a couple of bug reports for architectcures that are now quite rare, like HP-PA or SPARC, which no gfortran developer uses. These sometimes take a very long time to resolve.) The only place I can think of where gfortran produces explicit platform-dependent code is the library code for matrix multiplication on x86. There are several versions which use the base instruction set, AVX128 or AVX256. The code is compiled from the same source code with different flags, and the version selected at run-time.

The 8-bit immediate operand was sign-extended and added to the specified halfword in memory. It was a handy instruction, although not a game-changer. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Microsoft is a dictatorship. \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | Apple is a cult. No good as as an index until it gets loaded into a register. Even then a half word limits the table size. I'm wondering what were they thinking. -- Dan Espen

It was actually a pretty good fit. Remember, this was a 360/20 clone. Maximum memory was 32K and the registers (8-15 only) were 16 bits wide. It had no instructions for handling 32-bit binary data. It did have all the packed decimal instructions, though (except for SRP). -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | Microsoft is a dictatorship. \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | Apple is a cult.
