V.34 and V.90 are quite familiar to me.  I have a Windows 3.11 computer 
here that I occasionally fire up and connect via an internal V.34 modem 
(to a 20 hour/month dial up service) for the fun of it.  The budget dial 
up services are all but gone now.

I'm aware of V.92, but I don't think that I've ever had used that version.

in advance for six or twelve months).  They use an outside company that
maintains a nation-wide network of access points.  I'm far away from their
office, yet I dial a local number.  They also offer newsgroups via NNTP, again

Heh.  I use a Pentium 3 running Windows 2000, so perhaps a bit later...

Yes, it's largely a vanity item, but I also use this system nearly every day for
many tasks.  It has capacity for my needs and the software mix I like.  So why
change?  It's comfortable, like an old shoe.

The house computer is more modern and has the high-speed connection.

I had their basic DSL package via AT&T lines some time ago.  I couldn't 
move it to a new house with me because they grandfathered the service. 
I bent AT&T's arm backwards, and they sold me a 3 meg DSL connection 
that I'm using now.  As I understand it, AT&T is no longer selling 
standard DSL now either.  Of course, I lost DSL Extreme newsgroups when 
I couldn't move the service, so I use Eternal September now.  I wasn't 
aware that they still sold dial-up service.

I had a static IP DSL package from DSL Extreme via AT&T for over
a decade until AT&T decided to no longer support static.

I remember that package showing available from DSL Extreme not that many 
years ago.  Is that a recent thing they've discontinued?  Presumably 
only supported with a business connection now?

They (DSLExtreme) didn't discontinue my package.  They contract with
AT&T in my area, and AT&T stopped supporting static for DSLExtreme
customers.  Sigh.

Can you request a business plan through AT&T for a static connection? 
It might be worth looking into, even if just to price-check.  I've heard 
they will still sell a business connection at residential addresses.

AT&T no longer provided static IP plans to residential neighborhoods.

Nice.  I did notice that number 2 (V.22) only demonstrated
a 1200-bps connection, though.  They should have included
a V.22bis (2400 bps) connection, which includes an extra
little warble between the pure tone and the noise.
