Certainly in MN they can be sold. Regular supermarkets tend to rush a sale right before the date comes up, but there are some less formal grocery stores that probably buy expired product from the big chains, and sell them cheaper. Meat products tend to be frozen. I've bought canned/boxed goods that were several years past date. IME the only things that don't hold up are things with Nutrasweet, which starts tasting like floor cleaner.

However, many consumers will simply refuse to buy anything past its "Best Before" date anyways, and so stores will still try to rush selling items before that time. John Savard

I don't eat many eggs, and the eggs in my fridge sometimes push the limits. After a while washed eggs (as sold in the US) lose a little fluid by evap through the shell, and become more runny. I suspect unwashed eggs last longer, they used to preserve eggs (kept at root cellar temp) for up to 5 months by coating them with waterglass (sodium silicate gel) to seal them.

This may be a US/UK difference. Here (UK), selling past a USE BY is illegal (e.g. meat, dairy). But selling past a BEST BEFORE END is just "challenging" because people turn their nose up at it as if it became toxic at midnight, so they aim to push them out on or before the BBE date by discounting so it doesn't become an issue. Bread/Cakes (non creamy)/Biscuits/Chocolate and many tinned goods are fine beyond the BBE date. -- --------------------------------------+------------------------------------ Mike Brown: mjb[-at-]signal11.org.uk | http://www.signal11.org.uk

So cashiers would have to hit "Reduced item" button, then key in the price off sticker, and the receipt would show a bland "Reduced Grocery: Ł0.25p" Now, they add a new-barcode OVER the manufacturer's barcode, which is not an EAN-13 code, (don't ask me what format!) but it contains the EAN-13's *number* (to ID the product, not "Grocery") and a new price is embedded in the multi-digit string. And a check digit too. I was responding to the point that "barcodes don't contain the price". Absolutely, EAN-13 and EAN-8 codes do not contain a price. It's a country code/manufacturer code/up-to-you-here-on/check digit, and is just a number to index a particular product. Attaching prices to that *is* the store's database's job. That's why you can't use the EAN-13 to look up the price (in the usual way) -- you'll get the standard price. Morrisons yellow sticker (for people to see) but also put a white barcode replacement over the manufacturer barcode. ALDI instead leave the main barcode live, and stick a "25% off" sticker on, no extra barcode, no price detail, which *does* require the checkout operator to see the sticker and override the swiped->database price -- this can fail, so some shoppers have a strategy of putting all reduced items at the head of the queue, sticker side up, and pointing at them to make sure it goes through correctly! :) -- --------------------------------------+------------------------------------ Mike Brown: mjb[-at-]signal11.org.uk | http://www.signal11.org.uk

The same codes (I think they use a manufacturer prefix of 00000) that are used e.g. for items such as sliced meat or cut cheese from the deli counter

Since you also appear to be from Germany, remember the 80s and early 90s at ALDI? They were so "advanced". Before bar code was used cashiers in other stores read the price from the label and typed it in. No way to take track of how many items were still in stock. At ALDI the poor (and bad paid) cashiers had to remember a three digit code for every item or look it up from a table o a sheet of paper if they didn't. Type it in and the register would show the price but also subtract one product. Must be painful to learn up to 999 items with their code. And you could still make a mistake and sell a bottle of pricey sparkling wine for 99 Pfennige (a Pfennig was 1/100 of a Deutschmark). As everybody else they changed to bar code scanners in the mid 90s. -- Andreas

At ALDI the poor (and > bad paid) From what I've read, ALDI pays more than other supermarkets (whatever that means), but they have far fewer people who are expected to do all jobs, so their overall labor costs are lower. > cashiers had to remember a three digit code for every item or > look it up from a table o a sheet of paper if they didn't. Remembering up to 999 (or 1000?) codes is certainly something that not everybody could do well, so I suspect a certain qualificiation was needed.
