I suspect that with a better feeder a modern Android phone could be made to go fairly quickly - specs like ten 64 bit cores running at 1.5GHz, 6Gb of RAM, to say nothing of the GPU and multiple cameras at differing resolutions capable of several frames per second at full (silly megapixel) resolution are pretty common now. OK and then there's Java but it could be worse. Hitting 1000cpm would probably require parallel streams (MFCM here we come) but perhaps a few hundred cpm could be achieved with sufficient mechanical ingenuity[1], it's hard to believe that reading cards is harder than adorning video with facial decorations in real time. [1] Extracts tongue from cheek and notes that the hard part of making a 1000cpm card reader was never reading the cards it was always moving them correctly at that speed. I suspect that the arrangement relied on the extremely slow (10 cps) ASR33 teletypes, so that interrupts to switch between the 4K memory banks were not overly time consuming, and on that point, am I right in remembering that there was a complex method of handling interrupts to work out from which memory bank it had come because the MTPI and MFPI instructions wiped out previous bank information? Move To/From Previous Instruction Space. According to the Small Computer Handbook for the PDP-8/I, there's a 6-bit Save Field register. So the interrupt saves both the instruction and data fields in that register, from which an RMF instruction can restore them. John Savard

It doesn't make much sense to talk about the "PDP series" as they are mostly very different machines and despite the numbers there is no implied progression. The PDP-10 was a 36-bit timesharing mainframe. With the usual compliment of peripherals it cost high six to low seven figures, and required three-phase power and an air-conditioned environment. The PDP-8 (12-bit) and PDP-11 (16-bit) were minicomputers, much more affordable for schools, laboratories, or a single department, and had markedly less stringent power and environmental requirements. None of these machines could be said to be the precursor or descendent of the others, and they all had different hardware architectures and software.

I must contest your characterization of the DEC PDP-10 as a "scientific" computer. While DEC's early 36-bit models, the PDP-6 and the KA-10, did have some (but not all) of their roots as lab machines, the later KI-10, KL-10, and KS-10 were all built and sold as general purpose timesharing machines. Given the prominence of PDP-8s and PDP-11s in the scientific community, one might well mistake them as "scientific" computers -- and by extension, DEC as a "scientific computer" company. But all its machines could be and were used in a variety of ways. The PDP-11 so was widely deployed -- connected to laboratory instruments, for process control, in telecommunications equipment, and yes, even for timesharing -- it was rightfully a true general purpose computer. I find the distinction between "business" and "scientific" computer to be an archaic remnent resulting from design trade-offs made by IBM early in their model line necessitated by the technology of the time -- and one which they artificially held over purely as a marketing ploy. By the late 1960s, such a distinction should have been meaningless for any reasonable general purpose computer.

A PDP-10 was a 36 bit computer with hardware floating point that ran a real operating system. It also had fast interrupts so it could do realtime work. For a long time DEC's strong point was computers that could do both realtime control and useful computing. IBM dabbled in that market with the 1800 (a faster 1130 with some realtime interfaces), 360/44, and their later System 7 and Series 1, but they never acted like they were very serious about the market, compared to DEC or HP. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

You are conflating description of the use case with description of the processor. You could hook a Cray X-MP to that same hardware and collect that same data and the Cray would still be a data logger. It would be an insanely expensive data logger most of whose capacity was being wasted, but it would still be a data logger.
