As I stated in another reply in this thread, PDP-10s were general purpose timesharing machines, and saw use in many schools and a wide variety of businesses.

Minis look more like $2 Blue Pill than a laptop. Blue Pill
has 72 MHz ARM CPU, so on MIPS rating would be a supercomputer
in 1965. 20 kB of RAM seem just right for a mini and 64 kB
flash could be used for OS. Of course full install would
be more expensive, probably $3 for SD card as mass storage.
Main effort would be to add reasonable set of I/O devices,
they would need controllers working rather differently than
1965 hardware (and I am not aware of any modern punched
card reader...)

Nah, I guess the moving sheet would allow the light to stay stationary. So, I guess with the right feeder you could convert your scanner to a 2501. Wow, I guess I'm due for an upgrade. My scanner has been with me a long time but scanners with feeders are less than what I paid back then, plus they print. Actually duplex print. I was thinking my next upgrade would be a mother board. USB C would help with my backups. I'm also on first generation Sata. I guess I should do the MB, scanner, and printer. Last time I paid someone to do the mother board. I'm thinking it can't be that hard. -- Dan Espen

Tips: Press down the RAM _hard_. When I was teaching people how to assemble PCs the women never had any trouble with this--they were used to using their weight to apply pressure I think--but the men seemed to be afraid that they'd break something. If you don't already have one get a wrist strap. Don't really need a mat--cut the bag the board comes in (the one inside the box) so that it opens out flat and clip the wrist strap to that and you should be close enough--the bag's static-dissipative. Wrist straps are cheap, motherboards and CPUs are expensive. You'll usually get away without it but why take the chance? Once the machine is assembled and before you power it up, lay it so that the board is facing down and thump it on the back a few times to dislodge any screws or whatever that might have gotten dropped on the board. When you're ordering the CPU read the description carefully. Some come with heat sinks and fans that are perfectly adequate if you don't overclock--others don't so you need to order the fan and heat sink separately. Be sure which kind you're ordering. If the board and CPU you're looking at use Socket 1151, research carefully or send me a link to the board and CPU you're using. There are two versions of socket 1151 that are mechanically identical but electrically different. You may need a T10 and a T15 Torx driver--some cases, heat sinks, etc, are coming through with Torx screws these days.

I've using AMD all along and I just find their stuff more appealing. I believe they just took the lead in CPU speed again, but I probably won't go for their highest end CPU. I'm mainly looking for more modern USB and Sata. I kind of flip back and forth--my last several machines have been Intel, time to try an AMD again. But not this year. I've already spent more on fun projects than I wanted to.
