For those who aren't aware, decades of usenet archives are available at 
archive.org: https://archive.org/details/usenethistorical

Each file is listed by hierarchy and each newsgroup is it's own file in 
mbox format. I personally use Thunderbird with the "ImportExportTools NG" 
addon which allows me to import the messages directly to Thunderbird. If 
you use Linux you can also import then into Evolution if that's your cup 
of tea. Some of the older messages are always broken and are missing 
dates but for the most part, they are intact and very interesting.

It is for general research and interest. For example, you can find the 
original threads in comp.os.minix when Linus was setting up Linux and 
having them on your own machine to review is a lot better than Google's 
clunky interface.

https://archive.org/details/usenet looks like an even better entry
point: it also has the "Giganews Usenet Collection" and so on.

It would have been nice if the level of completeness was stated
somewhere.  Is it larger or smaller than DejaNews was?  I seem to
remember them asking around for tapes of archives back then, getting
a large collection from Henry Spencer, and so on.

Or /any/ half-decent mail reader; mbox is (or should be) a widely
understood file format.

It doesn't have the one alt newsgroup I was hoping it had. Tryoing to
look up old posts using googie news is a major pain.

The last few times I tried with Google I failed, so now I've stopped
trying ...
