They already had done that. The KL-10 had 30 bit addressing and late versions of TOPS-20 supported it. NB: I've amde my living programming TOPS-20 systems for the last 40 years, and
was a developer on the XKL version of TOPS-20. I was introduced to Tops-10
in 2003, in my current job.
The KL-10 had 22-bit hardware addressing, like the KI-10 before it, and 23-bit
microcoded pager addressing. The programmer was restricted to 8MW of address,
except in a single special case.
The TOPS-20 monitor allowed the 12-bit section number (the 256KW chunks of
address space are called sections) 7777 to be used in commands, but it was a
figment of the OS's imagination. Mapping to an actual section was done by the
monitor.

More specifically, sections 0 (the orignal address space) and 1 were mapped
together, which allowed immediate use of so-called "global" addresses. There
was a code snippet in the Hardware Reference Manual which showed how to go from
section 0 to section 1 in your program.

This covers four failed development projects: Coal-dust fired steam locomotives, turbine-driven steam locomotives, coal mining with water cannon and the Stirling motor. The Stirling motor is especially interesting; the first big application failed because of the introduction of the transistor.

The first big application for Stirling motors was radios in places where there was no electricity. Because of the high power requirements of vaccum tubes, you needed a fairly big power source to power them - batteries did not have enough capacity. Along came the transistor and the transistor radio, which you could power with batteries without a problem. And the market was gone.

Rubbish. Outback farms used a motor to drive a generator to charge car batteries. Typical systems used 32 volts, which supplied lighting (and other appliances such as radios). As well as that, vacuum tubes were made specially for portable and fixed radios, that ran off ordinary dry-cell batteries. The power requirements of such radios were considerably less than those of mains-powered tubes. For example, a typical vacuum tube for a mains-powered set required a filament supply of 0.3 amps at 6 volts, or 1.8 watts. Those were even more economical than the above series, which did not appear in RCA's 1956 line-up. Preceding the 50 ma series was the 0.6 / 0.12 ma series. All of those were capable of running off batteries.

From the early crystal sets of the 1920’s, through the 2-volt filament valves of the 1930’s fed by a single-cell lead-acid accumulator, the 1.5 volt filament portable valve sets of the 1940’s and 1950’s, onto the transistor radio portable. The lead-acid accumulator was invented by Planté in 1859 followed a couple of years later by the zinc and carbon cell of Leclanché that ultimately gave us the dry cell, the largest of which in common use was the U2, necessarily large to feed the hungry glowing filaments. It was the dry cell that enabled truly portable sets although very heavy because of the weight of batteries. The early germanium transistors made by Mullards, the OC71 and its brothers and sisters, liberated us from the expense of batteries that were incurred in valve sets, especially the HT battery sold by the name of “Winner” by Ever-Ready; a battery that was as large as two reams of A4 computer paper. One of the last valves incorporated into portable sets was the DF91. Before you came we had to strive To keep our filaments alive With much more juice than it would need To give our 60’s trannies feed. From 2 volts in the early sets With Planté’s acid lead-lined wets; Leclanché’s zinc and carbon cells Then gave us freedom in the dells. But still the sets were heavy rocks With Ever Ready’s “Winner” box, One-twenty volts of HT juice And U2’s for the glowing fuse. And then you came… and made our day. All had a trannie they could play For hour on hour of tinny blast. The PP3, that battery lasts! A tiny blob, germanium, (No more a background bassy hum) A glassy tube with spot of red And Mullards lead the world ahead. The OC71 was about 5/- (25p in today's money) whereas the phototransistor version, the OCP71 was 30/- (£1-50p today) It was held that Mullards changed the internal gunk of the OC71 to opaque to stop people cheating in trying to get a phototransistor but the reality ISTR was that the photosensitivity of the devices when a bit of the black paint got disturbed cause many industrial problems. It was numbered as though it was a valve (Tube to the Yanks)! O (instead of 0) because it did not require either heater voltage (E) or heater current (P) C because it was a "triode"

It has a section on Fun with X-Ray Tubes. :-( :-( :-( I also have a later edition from about 1969, and although ostensibly it is the same book, it has been completely sanitised and has all low voltage stuff with transistors, etc.

I think it had a section on electrifying garbage cans for racoon protection using Model-T spark coils. (Which you could still get from JC Whitney when I read the book in the 1970s, though I never had the cash), and a section on breaking down lead/acid car batteries in some horribly dangerous fashion for some project or other. -- columbiaclosings.com What's not in Columbia anymore..

The autioneer appealed to the audience not to bid on the chair and instrument cabinet which was coveted by the local hospital and they went, for $1 each, to that worthy establishment. No one else, including the hospital, was interested in the X-ray machine. It has a simple canonical X-ray tube, probably just like the pics in that book. It is shielded with a heavy glass shell which has turned a light purple where it was actually encountering X-rays over its many years of use. I've never tried to turn it on but may do so one of these times. It has an enormously heavy transformer in a nice thigh-high wooden cabinet and appears to be all there. The high-voltage lead is a "string" braided from fine copper wire and a non-conductive yarn.
