The code was mixed-up structured programming together with GOTOs and labels in the same routines, none of shich was indented, and some routines went over several pages. To maintain any of the code needed an initial exercise of indenting everything before you could get any idea of what the control flow was. The problem was that the bosses presumed that any expert coming in would hit the ground running (qv!!!!!!) on the first day :-(

Have you ever used C++? The above description doesn't match the reality that I've experienced (after writing two hypervisors, two computer system simulators and a full operating system in C++). C++ is a language, like any other. Like any other, one can write obfuscated code, or one can solve a problem.

I think a lot of the problem with many OO programmers have nothing to do with OO methodologies, or OO langauges, but with the fact that they've been convinced that "deep" object hierarchies are inherently desirable. There's a great 'rant' published by the author of FVWM that basically centers on the premise "Is-A" (inheritance) relationships are very rare. "Has-A" (composition) relationships are very common. Looking at code of mine that I'm proud of, most of the hierarchies are very wide and shallow -- the deepest ones are cases where dealing with e.g. protocol messages, there's a base class that handles the marshalling of data into and out of the messages generically, helper functions, etc. and per-message-variant classes that deal with acting on the individual messages.

Yup. I've done similar several times. Otherwise, I tend to use abstract (pure virtual) base classes in a fashion analogous to Java Interfaces - a case where multiple inheritance makes perfect sense.

I do a lot of OO design and have done for a long time now, I spend almost no time thinking about the programming language organisation, I spend time early on thinking about the problem at hand, specifically what sort of things it involves, what the relationships between those things are and what processes occur. Then I represent all of these in code. I have met some OO environments (Java I'm looking your way) where there is a whole raft of convention that gets in the way, and some developers seem to have read a "Desin Patterns" book and insist on using them all and making sure you can't miss it by embedding the pattern names in the variable and class names (EmployeeDataInterchangeObjectFacade). These are not IMHO good examples of OO design. > This is analogous to doctors in the US. The doctors spend a ridiculous > amount of time doing all the paperwork to satisfy insurance and > Medicare... instead of actually treating patients. A missing angle bracket in COMMON would create havoc in a monitor. I also liked to pick up data using a table of addresses; got to do indirection and indexing. /BAH

"A compiler", perhaps. "The compiler", well you need to be more specific. In C, a static function has file scope, so it is not eligable to be a target for a call from another compilation unit, so there is no impediment to generating it inline. Although, with gcc, this should only happen if compile time optimization (-O) is requested.

Rather a sweeping statement. It will depend on the compiler. One might say that logically the compiler should always do this, but I can think of situations when I would rather it did not. As we've discussed, today's computers are so powerful that "efficiency" is rarely an issue anymore, except in some sub-critical functions or extremely high volume processing. Readability is far more important. On websites, it appears that selling ads tracking user behavior is far more important than anything else. The local paper put up a new website, and even on fast PC's and lines, it runs rather slow. It won't run at all on older PCs with slower lines like DSL. (The new google groups, now a few years old, is a piece of crap.)

The nice thing about modern editors is that they'll automatically
associate end with the appropriate begin with a simple keystroke
and/or highlighting (e.g. with the enhanced vi (vim), when the cursor
is over a begin (e.g. { for C), it will highlight the corresponding
end (}) and the '%' key will move the cursor between them.
Burroughs BPL language had 'END WHILE', 'END CASE', 'END IF' etc. in the
language.

I stick em in the comments otherwise I haven't a clue;)

If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will
eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such
time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic
and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally
important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for
the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the
truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

A very sensitive area, for some.
For example, this is Linus Tovalds ...

Can we please get rid of the brain-damaged stupid networking comment
syntax style, PLEASE?
If the networking people cannot handle the pure awesomeness that is a
balanced and symmetric traditional multi-line C style comments, then
instead of the disgusting unbalanced crap that you guys use now,
please just go all the way to the C++ mode.
In other words, these three models are good:
(a)
/* This is a comment *./
(b)
/*
* This is also a comment, but it can now be cleanly
* split over multiple lines
*/
(c)
// This can be a single line. Or many. Your choice.
and they are all obviously visually balanced. Sometimes you want (b)
even for a single line, if you want the white-space to make it stand
out more, but you can obviously do that with (c) too, by just
surrounding it with two empty (comment) lines.
The (c) form is particularly good for things like enum or structure
member comments at the end of code, where you might want to align
things up, but the ending comment marker ends up being visually pretty
distracting (and lining _that_ up is too much make-believe work).
There's also another acceptablr traditional multi-line style that
you'll find in some places, but it's not the common kernel style:
(d)
/* This is an alternate multi-line format
that isn't horrible, but not kernel style */
Note how all the above comment styles have a certain visual symmatry
and balance.
But no, the networking code picked *none* of the above sane formats.
Instead, it picked these two models that are just half-arsed
shit-for-brains:
(no)
/* This is disgusting drug-induced
* crap, and should die
*/
(no-no-no)
/* This is also very nasty
* and visually unbalanced */
Please. The networking code actually has the *worst* possible comment
style. You can literally find that (no-no-no) style, which is just
really horribly disgusting and worse than the otherwise fairly similar
(d) in pretty much every way.
I'm not even going to start talking about the people who prefer to
"box in" their comments, and line up both ends and have fancy boxes of
stars around the whole thing. I'm sure that looks really nice if you
are out of your mind on LSD, and have nothing better to do than to
worry about the right alignment of the asterisks.
I'd be happy to start moving the whole kernel over to the C++ style,
it's been many many years since we had compatibility issues and we are
all used to it by now, even if we weren't all fans originally.
I really don't understand why the networking people think that their
particularly ugly styles are fine. They are the most visually
unbalanced version of _all_ the common comment styles, and have no
actual advantages.
So just get rid of the (no-no) and (no-no-no) forms. Not in one big
go, but as people touch the code, just fix that mess up.
Linus

The idea that /* * this comment style */ is good, while /* this comment style */ is awful and horrible is hardly even worthy of comment. I think it's time to take Linux and fork the kernel. While Mr. Torvalds certainly deserves our gratitude, clearly we now should simply leave him alone until he finds the help he needs and gets better. John Savard
