It will give you surprisingly little. The vast bulk of compiler bugs today are either in the lexing/parsing, and these will normally reject valid code; or they are in the optimisation. gcc has more than 180 different optimisations, almost all of which can be turned on or off at will. They are grouped into 0, 1, 2, g, and s; where 0 is (almost) all off, 1 low level optimisation, 2 pretty aggressive, g debug-compatible, and s optimize for space. And there are so much source code out there that the compilers are tested on; they are pushed through huge tests just there. And I haven't been bitten by a compiler bug in decades. -- mrr

There are actually quite a lot of them, they come in a small number of families but there is quite a gap between the lowest powered Atom designed for use in tablets and the biggest, fastest, multi-core-with-added -sauce-never-mind-the -power-consumption CPUs designed for gamers (or the similar but different ones for servers) - they all pick from the same grab bag of features with a common core but there is a lot of room for variations. Compiling to the common core should ensure code that works correctly across everything - but paying attention to the differences, especially the optional features, can make vast performance differences. I think the main reason is that the regression test suites for compilers have become very deep and wide (and keep getting more so), and the resources are easily available to run them all on every build. By now this will force most bugs that escape them to be in new features, sane people give the compilers a while to stabilise before jumping on the latest language features for this reason. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

The idea in TDD is that for every aspect of every function you write you first write a test for that aspect and then implement the functionality - starting with "accepts arguments of the following types and returns value of the following type". They cycle is specify, write test, run test, fix failures, loop until test passes, outer loop until nothing left to do. Proponents claim it is the fastest way to reliably produce working code, my only real objection is that the tests tend to be fragile and dependent on the chosen implementation strategy rather than the problem. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

I have never made any serious attempt to understand this movement. But my impression is that it mostly applies to easily specified problems. Such as: Is it a leap year? Solve a quadratic equation. I guess the argument I would find most convincing (to convert me) is a case study where some ginormous problem was or could have been avoided by TDD. It makes me think of someone who wants to write the Great American Novel and teaching the person to spell. Spelling is not his biggest problem.

I once had a TA who had been a software developer for the Saturn V, so he'd had decades of experience by the time I encountered him in the late 1980s. Frankly, it was ridiculous that he was taking classes from me rather than the other way around, but he had decided to go back for his PhD. Anyway, I once got a comment on my student evaluations saying the TA could break any piece of code ever written. The funny thing is, the student thought he was complaining!

We had a "tame" user (FWIW, he was a precious metals trader) who could
apparently break anything. We always used to give him new stuff to play
with before releasing it to live; if anyone could bvreak it, he could.

Some of the best code I have ever known was in a team where unit tests and code were written separately after the spec was ironed out. It became a competetive sport much to the benefit of the code. > Only then does he have any hope of finishing the testing. > > I have seen him in action. He is extremely good. We had a lady who earned her nickname, Crash, given by TW when she found a particular nasty bug scenario which caused TOPS-10 to crash. She routinely, accidentally found obscure bugs. One of them of was having a short argument list to a UUO (can't recall...had to do with IPCF) cross a page boundary. It had never happened before and astounding JMF that she managed to do it. /BAH

But > my impression is that it mostly applies to easily specified problems. > Such as: Is it a leap year? Solve a quadratic equation. Sort of, the idea is that you break whatever it is you are doing into testable functions each one fully specified - for the purposes of testing anything called by the function under test will be implemented by a 'mock' which behaves as specified by the test (and can verify that it is called as expected). So it really doesn't matter that the aspect you are verifying is "if the reactor.core.temperature() exceeds $MAX then reactor.dump_core()" because reactor will be mocked and dump_core will throw a DumpFailed exception just to test the error handling. No, I've never seen a reactor control system done that way (or any other for that matter) but I have seen people using it religiously on large and complex systems that did in the end work. What it doesn't do is provide any real help in doing that break down into testable lumps in a way that makes sense. So it is not a complete methodology really just a technique. One thing it certainly does help with is avoiding that "Now how the ^%#&@!%^ do I set up the combination of conditions necessary to hit the branch (and route to it) that the coverage analyser is moaning about" problem that may be familiar. With TDD building aspect by aspect you can't wind up in a position where it's hard - and yes this does effectively constrain the code which may also be a problem. > I guess the > argument I would find most convincing (to convert me) is a case study > where some ginormous problem was or could have been avoided by TDD. The argument I find convincing is "it works for me" from someone I know produces good code - doesn't mean it's going to work for me but that's fine I'm convinced it works for them. I'm quite happy with the idea that different people on the team take different approaches to doing things - it makes for *great* code reviews (the best(very rare) thing to see in a code review is "wouldn't $SIMPLETHING work instead of $HIDEOUSMESSIGOTINTO" from someone who is right or near enough to it to inspire a big improvement). > It makes me think of someone who wants to write the Great American Novel > and teaching the person to spell. Spelling is not his biggest problem. I love all the ways people come up with for keeping their code honest, I can usually see two or three more benefits than whoever is explaining it to me, issues with the claimed benefits and some inconvenient issues that make it sometimes fail to fit a problem at all. I usually arrange^Winsist on an "until it gets in the way" exception for new fads anywhere I work. I try and take the useful bits on board - TDD taught me to think more carefully about testability for example. -- Steve O'Hara-Smith | Directable Mirror Arrays C:>WIN | A better way to focus the sun The computer obeys and wins. | licences available see You lose and Bill collects. | http://www.sohara.org/

This is not quite the area, but I maintain an in-house client
billing system. The billing code is quite complex. It finally got to
the point where, to save my sanity, I wrote a test harness for
verifying that changes to the billing code did not break it.

No, but it is one of the problems. Why not solve it?
