Sort of, the idea is that you break whatever it is you are doing into testable functions each one fully specified - for the purposes of testing anything called by the function under test will be implemented by a 'mock' which behaves as specified by the test (and can verify that it is called as expected). So it really doesn't matter that the aspect you are verifying is "if the reactor.core.temperature() exceeds $MAX then reactor.dump_core()" because reactor will be mocked and dump_core will throw a DumpFailed exception just to test the error handling. No, I've never seen a reactor control system done that way (or any other for that matter) but I have seen people using it religiously on large and complex systems that did in the end work. What it doesn't do is provide any real help in doing that break down into testable lumps in a way that makes sense. So it is not a complete methodology really just a technique. One thing it certainly does help with is avoiding that "Now how the ^%#&@!%^ do I set up the combination of conditions necessary to hit the branch (and route to it) that the coverage analyser is moaning about" problem that may be familiar. The argument I find convincing is "it works for me" from someone I know produces good code - doesn't mean it's going to work for me but that's fine I'm convinced it works for them. I love all the ways people come up with for keeping their code honest, I can usually see two or three more benefits than whoever is explaining it to me, issues with the claimed benefits and some inconvenient issues that make it sometimes fail to fit a problem at all. I usually arrange^Winsist on an "until it gets in the way" exception for new fads anywhere I work.
