IMO (for what it's worth, probably not much) the EU was the worst possible alternative. They should have either stayed a free-trade bloc and not pretended to be a government or they should have, as Barb said, been a real government with a common police force, army, etc. I understand France and Germany are now talking about the second option with Britain gone. -- Pete

I believe that for some that has always been the goal for Europe, but getting there from the Europe of the 1950s was never going to be a quick, easy or smooth path - if indeed it is possible at all. Every step along the way is accompanied by perfectly valid protests of lost sovereignty. This business of acreting a supernation out of long established nations is something new, I hope it works, even more I hope the habit is catching and eventually all nations will merge. However I worry about a supernation because its government _will_ become corrupt and once it does there won't be anywhere to run.

There is a difference between a treaty with far away countries and managing security details of a geographically contiguous collection of political areas. The US is still playing the security role it got when WWII finished. Gaining respect and power is a good thing for the members and most realize that. I have a sneaking suspicion, as England looks at the process, they'll realize that many things in the EU are to their benefit and the exit will result in very small changes. Completely open for people, but you may be asked for some kind of ID if they have started "enhanced controls". i.e. have an immigration scare. You will have to declare VAT, but there are generous excemptions for personal use. Around $800 per person per visit. Commercial vehicles will have to declare, though. The Unionist thing is in the way. Main way out of Northern Ireland besides air, is the Larne-Stranraer ferry, where checks could easily be made, but that means, the Unionists would need passports there, to travel to another part of their own country. Too many have been killed. Things are moving too fast, people need time to adjust. Main thing at the moment is that the main transit of a british outlook to the EU is Ireland. The fact that some european leaders are pushing so hard for Britain to get out immediately would lead me to believe that the longer they delay the better deal they will get just to be rid of them. -- Pete
