First time the Irish Army was sent outside the country was to the Congo,
which had descended into chaos after the Belgians pulled out, well, kinda.
They were not prepared for service overseas, and it was a learning 
experienceCfor them. They were amazed at the wonderful fruit growing
along the side of the road, and when being rotated home, packed up some
partly ripe stuff, and sent it home, however, didn't consider that 
sort of stuff went by boat, via Dar As Salaam, whereas the troops were
brought by plane, US Air Force, Wheelus Air Force Base. Months later,
the carefully packed fruit arrived...

I just walked out into my patio and picked a ripe orange off my tree.

While I've no doubt that one *can* ripen fruit indoors, your declaration

You can't dismiss that. What you saw was due to the fact that
different orange varietys are ready to eat at different times.

That utterly mangles the real story and has
nothing whatever to do with the futures market.

There are in fact fuck all US oranges in the Australian market
and that only happens in the off season for Australian oranges.

Same with nectarines which have a much shorter time when
they are in season.

Eliminating a subsidy is raising taxes.
The RW is never going to do it.

Claims that the RW thinks one way when the result is the
opposite doesn't fly.

Many countries have big issues with the agricultural industrial
complex. (excuses to Ike for the name). 

Ours is documented in the TV-series "smaken av hund" (tr. "the taste
of dog") that ran ~2 years ago. This documents a set of regulatory
and industrial interactions that are definately not what the
legislators imagined, to say it diplomatically.

I do not know many details of the US interactions, but they
do not seem much better, from what can be observed casually.

You even have agri-subsidies going back to the Civil War.

Such market manipulation will have dietary effects on the
population when seen as a macro observation. Cheap, non-spoilt
food will be eaten by someone.

But won't usually produce obesity. The obesity epidemic
isn't due to food being too cheap, it's due to modern
processed food being very calorie rich and that sees
people shovel rather more calories into their mouths
than they burn.

And ag subsidies don’t necessarily produce cheaper
food anyway, quite a bit of the time they actually
produce more expensive food. Same with non tariff
barriers which the US particularly still has lots of.

recommendations have little to no effect.

that.  I suspect that in the modern world my parents would have been 
arrested for letting me do the sorts of things that I and my friends 
did.  I suspect that if they knew, _they_ would have been horrified.

or with the father of one of the obese kids I have
known very well indeed since before he even
went to school.

So there are still parents today who put the kids out like they were 
cats and then don't worry about them until lunchtime?

Not put them out so much as let them do what they like.

One of my neighbours has 2 boys still in grade school, both
quite skinny, and they go past my house most days with their
mates, because there is a small park next to my house which
is primarily intended as a walk way to the high school that is
at the end of the park. Those two head thru that park with
their mates most days, they roam around the high school
out of hours because it has a very large grassed oval and
some basketball courts etc. No parental supervision at all.

injury, death, or disagreements with the authorities.  I look back and
