Western Europe and even Australia has had those for years now.

In London, even fancy cards aren't necessary. Just touch your bank card on the sensor at entry and exit, and that's that. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)... Then you pay a £5 deposit for a contactless card onto which you can load some credit. My point, however, was that no very fancy card is necessary; most people do have a bank card and it just works. The terminals (on buses, at tube stations, etc.) are offline most of the time so have a very high degree of autonomy and work even if the central server is out of contact. -- Using UNIX since v6 (1975)...
