Then you pay a £5 deposit for a contactless card onto which you can load 
some credit.

My point, however, was that no very fancy card is necessary; most people 
do have a bank card and it just works.

The terminals (on buses, at tube stations, etc.) are offline most of the 
time so have a very high degree of autonomy and work even if the central 
server is out of contact.
