When has Trump said anything against immigration from Mexico? He has said quite a lot about ILLEGAL immigration and about MUSLIM immigration, but I don't recall him saying anything in particular against legal immigration from Mexico or anywhere else in the Western hemisphere.

Right. And the comment about Muslim immigration had the word temprorary in it because the vetting process is almost non-existant. I've counted two news reports which included the word temporary; all the other reports elided the word. /BAH

The "almost non-existent" refugee vetting process that requires _years_ of background checks and interviews? Why would a terrorist pretend to be a refugee (or other immigrant) and go through that when he can get a tourist or student visa in _hours_? As usual, not only do neocons have the wrong solution, they're not even addressing the right problem. > I've counted two news reports which included the word temporary; all > the other reports elided the word. Neocons' "temporary" solutions have a long track record of becoming permanent. In reality, they _intended_ them to be permanent all along but knew the public wouldn't accept them if presented that way. In this case, they say they'll remove the "temporary" ban on Muslims when the FBI can guarantee no terrorists will get through, but they know full well the FBI will _never_ be able to give such a guarantee. The only alternative I see is merging the nations themselves, but then you've just created a larger nation-state, not a multinational state. That is the US and Canadian model, and it's worked pretty well for us but mostly because, as a nation of immigrants ourselves, we've done a decent job of integrating other immigrants than nations with a long history, i.e. virtually all others on the planet. > The EU appears to be heading in that direction, for once without > using conquest as a mechanism. I expect it'll be a long time, if ever, before all those nation-states renounce their sovereignty and become mere political subdivisions of a single multinational state. Even the US and Canada, which are much more alike and have a much more peaceful history, aren't likely to merge anytime soon. True, but the EU is a lot further along that road.

When I took PolySci, many years ago, it was defined as having geographic boundaries and police power. Is Canada (including PQ) a nation? The US (including Puerto Rico)? Belgium? Switzerland? There seem to be a number of nations that don't have a common language, and sometimes not a common culture, either. Having a common language and culture makes it easier, is all. > > The only alternative I see is merging the nations themselves, but then > you've just created a larger nation-state, not a multinational state. > That is the US and Canadian model, and it's worked pretty well for us > but mostly because, as a nation of immigrants ourselves, we've done a > decent job of integrating other immigrants than nations with a long > history, i.e. virtually all others on the planet. > >> The EU appears to be heading in that direction, for once without >> using conquest as a mechanism. > > I expect it'll be a long time, if ever, before all those nation-states > renounce their sovereignty and become mere political subdivisions of a > single multinational state. > > Even the US and Canada, which are much more alike and have a much more > peaceful history, aren't likely to merge anytime soon. > > S >

What is "it"? That sounds more like the definition of a "state", sometimes called a "country" in places where "state" has an idiosyncratic local meaning. > Is Canada (including PQ) a nation? Canada calls itself a multinational state because they recognize native tribes as distinct nations. But note that the language of PR is Spanish. I was avoiding the word "state" for that reason (so I'll call them "provinces" instead). The same as the phrase "police power" may call up images of the County Mountie, but is really far more general. The US govt does have police power within its political subdivisions (e.g. the FBI). That's why I said "roughly"; it's enough to convey the general idea, but it wasn't meant to cover the details you need for edge cases. > By that standard, Mississippi and California aren't the same nation, They would probably agree; however, the range of culture within each overlaps to a high enough degree that you can't really separate them, plus the same is true of everywhere between them such that there's nowhere logical to put a national border. At worst, you could call the US a multinational state, but that goes against the American "Melting Pot" mythos. > nor Quebec and the rest of Canada. Sort of. English, yes, but I had a few adjustments to make when
I was living there (and quite close to the Canadian border).

That's obviously wrong since the same definition applies just as much to city-states and multinational states as nation-states. Such distinctions become important when trying to understand border conflicts and civil wars, e.g. the leading proposals for Israel and Palestine being one [multinational] state vs two [nation-]states. > Within the broader context, "nation" doesn't seem to be a useful term > to me. Is Islam a "nation"? It mostly shares a language and some > culture. Muslims speak numerous languages, and even the "shared" religious part of their culture has serious divisions, e.g. Shia vs Sunni. You can't lump Turks, Kurds, Aghans, Somalis, Saudis, Qataris, etc. together. The fact we even have _names_ for each of those groups is a strong indicator that they're different nations. > The "5 Eyes" (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand)? Yes, PR (and other territories) have an odd status. IMHO, PR should either vote for statehood or be kicked out; unfortunately, the GOP doesn't want them to be a state because it'd tip the balance in the Senate and Electoral College, so they would simply block it. > I was avoiding the word "state" for that reason (so I'll call them > "provinces" instead).
