Sylvania ran an ad for its LED back in 1957, called a photo diode. The improved unit, with a diameter of .077 inch, is ideal for highly compact assemblies and other applications where space is at a premium. Previously posted here was an excerpt from a Bell Labs report on deployment of LEDs. In the mid 1970s they began to deploy them as indicator lights within telephone sets instead of incandescent lamps. I think a big reason was that they lasted longer, which would save a Bell technician from making a service call, back in the days when stuff was all rented and they were responsible for all maintenance. Applications included the line-in-use indicator in keysets, and the dial illuminator in Trimline and Princess phones. It's curious in that while LED's may have become cost practical in the 1970s for electronic devices, it took until recently for them to be cost practical in bright lighting such as streetlights and flashlights. (SEPTA replaced coach vestibule incandescent lamps with LEDs a few years ago, which give off better light. Now, locomotives even have LED headlights, which are extremely bright.)

The use for indicator lamps did not require efficiency, they could be much less efficient than a small incandescent (quite hard that) and still be fine if they outlasted the equipment they went in (thus saving holders and replacement costs). There was also no worry about available colours, using what was available and cheap was fine - for a long time everything glowed in little red dots. Illumination OTOH is sensitive to efficiency and colour, the latter may be sacrificed for the former sometimes (sodium street lights for example) but for most purposes a half decent white light is essential and it was a long time before LEDs got past green. Getting to blue in the 1990s netted the inventors a Nobel prize (in 2014). White LEDs, like the ones that illuminate my house, are actually blue LEDs pumping a phosphor that emits a reddish yellow light. Then there was the little matter of efficiency - which by the time we had white LEDs was really important and the bar was way up - as good as an incandescent was nowhere near good enough, the target was a CFL at four times the efficiency of an incandescent. That was reached a few years ago, and now the best LEDs are surpassing even HID for efficiency, while LEDs better than CFLs are cheap. I think it was the late eighties or early nineties that you could buy at hobby levels "bright" LEDs. Each color uses a different semiconductor to produce the color, and after red, green, orange and yellow came about (maybe the latter two were the same, with different filtering?), there was a pause before blue and then white arrived. SO perhaps the process of trying to find what would work for white caused improvements elsewhere. Or maybe it was because for a lot of uses, bright colored lights aren't so useful. So nobody bothered until there was white, but that's speculation. Yes, now you can get Christmas lights in all kinds of colors and traffic lights, but maybe nobody thought of that, they saw the goal as strong output white LEDs? Michael

Being able to get cheap readouts in 1974 was just a marker, they'd have to have been available for some time in order to get that cheap, I think I paid a dollar each. But I'm not sure how much earlier they were being used. Maybe 1969, but I'm not sure why I pick that year. Michael

I was hoping I could remember where I had these bits of facts from. I must have seen (after the fact) an old magazine that had some notice of the LED, because I do remember thinking it took it's time to become viable. 1970 sounds about right for being "cheap and available". You probably don't see many projects before that with LEDs (if any) but it's right on the cusp. Michael

May have been when someone did some sort of press release, etc. Long before then, some of the old plastic transistors that didn't have enough opaqueness in their cladding were discovered to be quite photosensitive, leading to photodetector transistors. For leds, don't recall the source, but one of the engineering mags had reported on the ability to generate photons in diodes--unfortunately don't recall if they were in the visible spectrum either.

I have seen talk of early "transistors", but I do have a vaguer memory of light emitting things like you just posted. Real light, not "flames before it burned itself out". SOmetimes that stuff was accidental, but I think there were also cases (certainly with early "transistors" that they couldn't replicate things, so probably other things needed to advance to make them feasible. There is a book, I've mentioned it here before, about the development of Radar during WWII, which entailed pushing frequency limits up, and building things at higher and higher frequencies. They had problems with receivers, so they went back to "cat's whisker" detectors, which resulted in those early semiconductor diodes like the 1N21. And that seems to have set the stage for such diodes after the war, like the 1N23, and moved things forward so it was time for Bell to "develop" the transistor. People forget early technology, so it becomes a footnote in a textbook, or a garbled explanation of someone else's explanation. If you go back to the source, and build on that, rather than building on layers that came later, you may have a chance to move things further. Michael

Thanks for that...my faith(?) in wikipedia is somewhat restored :-) I'm alway surprised at how much is *not* on the web: earlier this year I was researching my grandfather's regiment (the Devonshires) in WW1 and found very little info. About 1982 my mother's cousin was interested in geneology, and did a family tree of my father's side. I didn't pay much attention, but I never came across much in looking at random but almost relevant books. Though one time I was at someone's house and there was a random copy of a history magazine, and there was my great, great, great grandmother. But then about 2009, I started looking, and there is a whole lot of stuff online. It boggles my mind. Of course, some of it is that someone had looked at old letters and published them at one point (historical societies), and then those same or later historical societies have put the material online. I can't imagine this stuff being readily available unless I'd gone physically to Winnipeg where it's "local history". I even found out something via "google books", something showing up in a search so I knew to get the book. Michael

I might do that eventually. My sister did most of the research on our family, but she passed away a year ago and she had no sense of organization, especially on a computer!
