I was hoping I could remember where I had these bits of facts from.  I 
must have seen (after the fact) an old magazine that had some notice of 
the LED, because I do remember thinking it took it's time to become 
viable.

1970 sounds about right for being "cheap and available".  You probably 
don't see many projects before that with LEDs (if any) but it's right on
the cusp.
