I think Emacs lets you see the phase of the moon, I've never used it other than to poke around and see what features like that it includes. I thought I saw a "weatherstation" the other day that showed the phase of the moon. My Garmin GPS receiver gives the time of sunrise and sunset, which is one of the things that would be nice to get in a program. Run it in the morning and get the sunrise and sunset, and the phase of the moon. That's why I had that book about astronomy on the calculator out, I'm not sure where it is now. It showed all you needed, it would be relatively simple to put it all together as a single program. Of course, with the internet, this sort of thing is fairly available. Some of those weather sites provide such things. Michael

The places that hand them out just order "type 4" with their own name imprinted. I suspect not a lot of thought goes into it, and the decision is mostly based on what the pictures are. I'd like to know why. The giveaways aren't tailored for rural users, they're a generic product printed a thousand miles away and customized with the name of the local feed store (or whatever). Mostly we're an urban nation now, and mostly streetlights trump the moon. I suspect most people couldn't tell you what the moon looked like right now, without going outside and looking. Maybe cops who work the night shift. And omitting the phases of the moon gives a little more space for people to write things in, and avoids the religious nutters who are looking for pagan or Satanist cues to complain about (like the perennial complaints about the P&G logo). The moon is mostly relevant (these days) to people who are concerned with tides, and to people in rural areas who are out and about at night.

back. Sometimes, one month of days is shown.

M-X phases-of-moon returns a text list of phases for 3 months. MIT's
Project Athena used to deliver an ASCII pic of current moon phase on
dialup logout. I've had a similar utility since my first Linux
system. [1]
What I'd like is a similar utility that shows the direction of
moonrise from my (or any given) location. It wobbles back and forth
across the horizon during the course of a month. Very unsettling. :-)
