A contest, as it were. It is perfectly normal in Greece for rich people to sue the state for collecting taxes, and keep the case going for year, if not decades. While the tax sits uncollected. And many times the state just gives up. They don't have the manpower to meet the rich guys' lawyers in court, and have the skills to mee their arguments. The civil servants were not the best in their class, and are not well paid, even by Greek standards. -- mrr

A country (I believe the Dominican Republic, but may have been Haiti) had its tax collection taken over by US officials so it could pay its debts. -- Pete

This shows that the gut reaction of the EU is still to be a suoernational organisation of sovereign states, not a union or federation. I wouldn't call the Eurozone a dictatorship. It is run by a council appointed by the various governments. These are all democratic and answerable to their electorates. It is, however, not a union; like the name claims. (European Union). Otherwise, the EU will have to go through a constitutional process again just like the US had to do. By "strong" I do not mean a strong country like France or Germany, dominating the other countries. The people who head that central control will focus on money, not security, because they can point at NATO (the USA) when things get fucked up to the point of fighting. Russia is reverting back to Cold War days with their attitude. The continent is being deluged by people because of Middle East and African conflicts. There is a religious war going on which Europe is not capable of handling well. China is mixing into the messes and North Korea is an unknown which smells of a trigger to me. /BAH

as you take it with a grain of salt when it's on the subject of

Al Jazeera disappeared so I don't watch that anymore. The Japanese
news I used to watch also disappeared.

at the beginning. Although I've been able to discern when they

So get a broadband connection and start choosing your own channels.
There are around 40 000 radio channels and many hundred tv ones
on the Internet.
Al Jazzera, the BBC and the others are there.
An apple-tv shows this very nicely. Or a chromecast thingie.

I wrote "broadband". You need around 1.2 megabit/s to show any
TV worth viewing. But this should be available in most of the civilised
world. Of course fiber is better.

Peh! I've been trying to buy basic cable; the telesales types
won't sell me what I want. There is also a $500 charge to
install (the wires already exist). I'm slowly losing access
to the digital over-the-air broadcasts.

Have you tried the cable providers web site? I don't know about your
cable company but with mine it's easy to build and order a package
online that the sales people don't seem to know about.

Yea, that's how I found out about all the extra charges which the
call in people never mentioned. I also found out that these
sales people should have been able to sell me what I want but,
each time I called, the droid argued and argued that the package
wasn't available.
I bought another expensive indoor antenna which has a plug-in
booster. That helps a little bit but I still have iffy
reception from a transmitter which is 5 miles from here.
I'm simply in a dead zane and need to learn to give up the
TV show I liked a lot, "The Closer".

Antennae (there, that's the plural I was looking for) are basically useless
today. Last summer I went to Phoenix for a week and didn't want to
reactivate the cable for such a short time. I'm only a few miles from all
the transmitters on South Mountain, but I could barely get any reception
with a digital antenna, and that only with constant tweaking. First and
last time I'll try that.
