Try temporarily running a cable through an open window. Then you'll know
whether it's worth drilling a hole.

A flea and a fly in a flue
Were imprisoned, so what could they do?
Said the fly, "let us flee!"
"Let us fly!" said the flea.
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

This seemed appropriate somehow...

Ogden Nash wrote that? It somehow seems appropriate.

    I think that I shall never see
    A billboard lovely as a tree.
    Indeed, unless the billboards fall
    I'll never see a tree at all.

From the title, isn't that Walt Whitman?

Not unless billboards were sufficiently commonplace in 1800s to be
worthy of comment.

Whitman is not the only poet to write a poem entitled "Song of the Open
Road".

Unlike Ogden Nash, did Walt Whitman post-date Joyce Kilmer?

Walt Whitman died in 1892.

Joyce Kilmer wrote "Trees" in 1913.

Whitman died in 1892; Kilmer was born in 1886 and probably did *not* write
poetry as a child. Joyce Kilmer was killed by a sniper in WWI on July 30,
1918. The bullet went through his brain and he probably died immediately.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyce_Kilmer

The above "Song of the Open Road" is a parady by Ogden Nash of Kilmer's most
famous poem, "Trees".

Here is a poem about trees that I like:

The Heart of the Tree, by Henry Cuyler Bunner

What does he plant who plants a tree?
   He plants a friend of sun and sky;
He plants the flag of breezes free;
   The shaft of beauty, towering high;
   He plants a home to heaven anigh;
      For song and mother-croon of bird
      In hushed and happy twilight heard—
The treble of heaven’s harmony—
These things he plants who plants a tree.

What does he plant who plants a tree?
   He plants cool shade and tender rain,
And seed and bud of days to be,
   And years that fade and flush again;
      He plants the glory of the plain;
      He plants the forest’s heritage;
      The harvest of a coming age;
The joy that unborn eyes shall see—
These things he plants who plants a tree.

What does he plant who plants a tree?
   He plants, in sap and leaf and wood,
In love of home and loyalty
   And far-cast thought of civic good—
   God's blessings on the neighborhood,
      Who in the hollow of His hand
      Holds all the growth of all our land—
A nation’s growth from sea to sea
Stirs in his heart who plants a tree.

Nice.

However, it's time to get rid of those trees -
they're a waste of valuable condo space.
In their place, I offer this version from
an ancient Mad magazine:

    I think that I shall never hear
    A poem lovelier than beer.
    The brew that Joe's Bar has on tap,
    With golden base and snowy cap.
    The foamy stuff I drink all day
    Until my mem'ry melts away.
    Poems are made by fools, I fear,
    But only Schlitz can make a beer.

There is a Polish beer called Tyskie, as my system
fails, I get someone to bring home a bottle, open it, and just
smell. Maybe sip a bit later.

'Most German beers.

Maybe you can get a "Blue Tooth" antenna that sends a signal through your

I wish I could get something that would send a signal through mine.
Foil vapor barrier apparently seemed like a good idea in the '60s.

	It seemed like a good idea in the 2010s when I put it in here - but
only on the inside of the roof insulation. It actually was a good idea the
inverted V shaped reflector it creates at the top of the house does
wonderful things for the WiFi and DECT reception in the house, while the
external stuff comes in through the walls where there is no foil.

	There is one thing though - stud finders are completely useless
through two inches of polyiso insulation with foil on both sides, I will
never find the rafters again.

	I have four inches of polyiso between the rafters and two inches
below them, the two inch layer is also taped to form a vapour barrier.

Ah. That's some insulation for a house in the temperate zone!
I used 4" celotex between then "bubblewrap" over that.

	It's the expected amount for new builds these days - not that
anyone checked my jbex - I took a lot of time and trouble over the
insulation and sealing of this place - the 4" slabs between the rafters
are sealed to the wallplate with expanding foam and all the seams are taped
with aluminium tape. I did have to use bubblewrap in the crawlspaces -
there was no way I could get rigid boards in there. Sealing up to the gables
was a pig and there's a leak at one end that I need to find and deal with
but even with that the whole house (2400 sq ft floor and a half) stays warm
without heating until it gets down to about 5 centigrade outside.

	I did the jbex in the middle of winter - it was great for finding
places that needed sealing, walk past then gap and get an icy knife blade
telling you where to put the tape.

Well, winter takes place in the temperate zone. And even with that amount of
insulation, one can't go through a whole winter without having to use heat -
heat that is often produced by *burning fossil fuels*!

Even before global warming became a concern, the foreign exchange value of
fossil fuels became relevant after October 1973.

The ham radio press has run from time to time designs for an antenna
feedthrough that uses foil glued to a window to create a few picofarad
capacitor.

I have a short piece of cable that's flat, intended for going under a
window. I found it on some cable, I haven't tried it, but the concept is
interesting.

But an outdoor antenna is more than a hole for the cable. You have to
mount it somewhere, maybe more holes, and get it high enough so there's no
obstruction. That may mean a mast, or a tower. Once the antenna is
outside, you have to worry about lightning, and add lightning protection.
If the antenna is directional, but the signals in multiple places, you may
need a rotator.

I shifted things for other reasons this week, and discovered I could
finally get FOX. That's not quite true, for the purpose of scanning for
channels with signals (at least on my two DTV sets, there's no way to
enter the stations by hand), I have a loop on a long piece of bamboo that
I stick out the window. It gets all the channels except ABC (which is
lower down and weak, most people can't receive it here either), but it's a
temporary thing so I haven't got FOX regularly. But now it's coming in, I
don't know if a tree was cut down or the station has changed its power or
antenna.

Unfortunately, with the homemade bowtie array in that position, while I
get the two different PBS stations and CBS really well, it's not getting
the NBC station, so I will have to fuss around every time I change
channel.
