I'm not following. The BREXIT decision was the result of a direct application of democracy. The population was allowed to vote directly on the issue, rather than voting for a representative that the voters trust to represent them. Giving the vote on issues directly to voters leads to the tyranny of the majority. We try to create "informed" voters with our education system, but given the average intelligence and interest of the population, that doesn't work. At least in today's culture. Better is a representative system, where we hope that we can count on voters to pick people better than themselves and thereby get more informed decisions. As I've said, no system can be perfect because the system is run by and for imperfect people. -- Dan Espen

There is no evidence that the average Congresscritter is "better" (i.e. more competent) to analyze or judge issues than the public in any way other than a lust for power and some knowledge of politics and law. They do have the immense advantage of a staff that can help them to understand things or wing it when that's not possible. There are a few exceptions. And also a few who rarely bother to show up for work. I doubt that it's different in other countries.

Does that make them all qualified to run the country? And telling people what they want to hear helps one get elected, it does not mean that what they want to hear is what needs to be done. It's clear that "democracy" is a defective concept. The notion of "the people" having input is a good one. The notion of giving them everything that a majority wants clearly has problems.

But, to make it even worse, it is said that politicians spend one third of their waking hours raising funds for the next election. So even if one had a good politician, much of his time is wasted. This is not an argument for public funding, just one more ingredient in the mix of problems. I don't understand the angst I've been seeing in the news. The EU in Brussels is corrupt, not elected and seems to be trying to bankrupt member countries. I wish they had organized the EU similar to the US making each country the equivalent to a US state. You baldly asserted upthread that the EU is corrupt. I'd like to see your evidence. The EU is far less corrupt than the governments in many of its member states. I'm not supposed to talk about it, but I had direct experience as a technical advisor to the case team in a very high profile abuse of monopoly proceeding. I have never seen a more brilliant, efficient, hard-working, fair and responsible set of public servants. I was in awe. They were all far younger than me, and much more grown up. If that was a true sample, I'd be so pleased to have them shaping a society for my grandkids. The big picture was to set up co-operation between European countries to do away with a thousand years of stupid wars against each other that cost millions of ordinary lives in the service of xenophobic megalomaniacs. The British provided their fair share of both. Economic power needed a degree of federation to provide a level trading field. Security has been a thorny issue. Every country in EU runs scared of an army run by the two biggest military powers among their ranks. The problem was the modern British megalomaniacs, ever since joining the EU have nickel and dimed their way as far as possible from the original dream of a federated Europe. Which has weakened the dream for everyone. In the UK now we have both main political parties separately fighting among themselves like rats in a sack for the dubious privilege of 'leading' us into decades of economic and political nightmare. I'm dreading the Schadenfreude as they smugly watch the whole EU implode as a follow-on from their greedy smallmindedness. What a spectacular omnishambles! That referendum idea all started at the last general election as a spiffing wheeze by prime piglet David Cameron to line up his porcine party members that were running scared of a little fruitcake party of ultra-patriots. As I recall they held referendums on sort of a constitution and the
proposal failed, then the powers on high got the same thing in a treaty,
which the people didn't get a vote on.

I debated that one, "referenda" is correct Latin, but no one uses Latin
plurals anymore. I can't recall just now what the word is, but there's one
plural they anglicize that has me yelling at the TV.
