According to Wiikipedia you could also buy one for $5,000 - I think you could buy a pretty nice house in those days for $5,000. Imagine being a cop armed with a revolver and coming up against that thing, one of the variants was 47" long and weighed 16 pounds. [1] Browning Automatic Rifle.

Actually, many criminals make an attempt to not violate certain laws for which there is a high certainty of swift, sure, severe punishment. For instance, drug dealers might shoot each other all the time, but tend to avoid (not always) killing cops. There are of course heinous crimes, but these tend to be a rather small fraction of total crimes. We hear about them more often because they are an exception to the rule. For instance, house burglaries and shoplifting are rampant, but get little attention. The effectiveness of a law to deter criminal activity depends on many things. First, the law has to be reasonably enforceable (this in itself involves many issues.) Second, it has to have true public support.

The loophole is that there's nothing stopping non-dealers from selling their guns inside the show, i.e. nobody checks to make sure the person who walks in with a gun is the person who walks out with it.
