No. I think there is more than one conversation going on here,"old" vs
"real old"

Starting ca. 1946 there were channels 2-13. There were gaps between those
channels, some very big. I would call that "Classic TV". IIRC there were
continuous tuners that covered the range. One of the gaps, between 6 and 7
was so big the (*entire* FM band fitted in the gap.). Later on, UHF 14-84
was added. The switch to high definition, say ten years ago, assigned new
channel allocations, it changed the modulation technique and most anything
that could be changed.

In the classic era, the most popular tuner covered 2-13 with a switch with
detents and then a "fine tuning" knob to finesse the tuning. I thought the
continuous tuner was much better, with the standard tuner deposits would
form on the contacts and keeping them clean was a PITA. Huge numbers of
people smoked then and that may have made the problem worse, I don't know.
I do know for sure that I could find a slight yellow film on stuff in my
house. I expect cooking grease was also a contaminant.

I am positive there was never a TV that covered ch 2-84 in one sweep.

Getting good physical contacts is hard. I watched several experiments, over
a period of years, trying to perfect computer plugboards (No grease there,
but no smoking either.) They cladded the contacts with various exotic
material, rhodium is the only one that sticks in my mind. Gold works but it
is expensive. As far as I know the problem was never solved. We went to
stored program computers instead. Standard practice was, if the program
didn't work right, go over and shake the hell out of the plugboard.
