Actually that would be a 5687 vs a 5867.  And apparently
the IBM 701 was initially designed to use only 5965
tubes.

The 5687 tube has twice the plate dissipation rating of
the 5965, and typically would be operated at twice the
plate current.  I suspect the the output tube in the
8-tube modules was modified by replacement with a 5687
to provide better noise characteristics.
