#617 — Harry Potter Magic Circle

FromDavid Dalton <dalton@nfld.com>
Date2026-06-20 01:01 -0230
SubjectHarry Potter Magic Circle
Message-ID<0001HW.2FE6411F035483EE3065F238F@news.eternal-september.org>
In my latest attempt at global new age onset magickal
workings, which I describe on my web page and on
alt.religion.druid , I have invoked a Harry Potter Magic
Circle as some of the collaborators.

How was it formed? Prospective members were
me, J.K. Rowling, and each other person who has
read at least one Harry Potter book. Then
Goddess, who I define as the ruler of the region
all/everything, subconsciously interviewed them
to see if they are willing and ready to participate.
Those that were formed the Harry Potter Magic Circle,
and I then did a mesh handshake of me and the
others (connecting each in the mesh to each other
in the mesh via great circle brachistochrone movable
paths for now, until/unless some move into space
beyond low Earth orbit).

Of course this could be yet another failed Sisyphean
attempt, possibly delusional, but I thought it might be
of interest to Harry Potter fans among you.

Some may ask why not have the connecting lines
be straight lines through the Earth. Well, my region
doesn’t extend below 15 km below the geoid and
the connecting paths have to be in my region.

Anyway, last night’s attempt failed but I plan to try
again tomorrow evening (summer solstice/Father’s Day/
National Indigenous Peoples Day/D-moon) and if
that fails I would try one last time on Midsummer Eve,
or St. John’s Eve, the night of June 23, which is
Newfoundland Irish Catholic Bonfire Night, distinct
from the Anglican Guy Fawkes Night.

Harry Potter is a movie "creature". He does not
exist in reality. I shall NOT classify him as a
real magician, and hence has no place in Usenet
newsgroups related to magic.

When we talk magic in Usenet, we are talkiing
about real magic as in lores and fairy tales.

David Copperfield might be a better candicate,
but if and only if he really uses magic, not
movie tricks. :)

/rant on/

Mr. Man-wai Chang you may well know the following but
in case you do not I explicate the matters at hand.

Actually Harry Potter and his friends are the subjects
not only of a Movie but of a long series of books and each book
is long and the each book in the series gets longer. It was very
popular with the young people a long time before the movies.
I never got into the Potter matters in very deeply but
when nothing better was available I would look at the movies
on TV. My equivalent series was the Lord of the Rings from
the Hobbit onward.

I also liked the EE Doc Smith "Interplanetary" and
Lensman stories, the stories of Manuel by James Branch Cabell.
Loot at Figures of Earth for a sample.

Magic per se is not real. David Copperfield was a
slight of hand artist before he went to TV and Video. His
magic is not "real". The idea of "real magic" was invented
when people did not understand the real physical world
very well so they invented stories to explain what they
saw during natural events.

This group, rec.arts.sf.written. is about fictional
i.e. unreal matters. Lots of stories you see on Television
or Video are based on books or at least written out stories
that may go directly to film or have a history of being
printed. SF no longer stands for Science Fiction as it
die in my distant youth but for Speculative Fiction
which includes not only speculative science but
fantasy such as gods, demons, vampires, zombies and other
un-dead creatures but fairies, gnomes, leprechauns, pixies
and little i.e. child-sized adults, very small men.
Over-indulgence in alcohol and other poisons may well
have a part in these imagined creatures.

Time travel is not real and may most likely be
as impossible as "real" magic and yet films and videos
have been made about it.

According to our understanding of the Universe
Star Wars and all the episodes and seasons of Star
Trek are totally impossible. Both were based on stories
published in Science Fiction magazines from mostly the
20th Century which ran from 1901 to 2000. Those magazines
have suffered an unfortunate decline in the 21st Century
where people will live (hopefully) until the 22nd Century.

David Dalton seems to me to be very confused
and seems to believe in magic of one sort or another.
I see that he includes children's books in this mailing
and talking animals featured in many children's books
are not real. I do not believe in Magick however it is
mis-spelled. And the same goes for spells and hexes.
There are some paranormal phenomena which seem interesting
but which seem become very elusive when examined closely.
Freddie the talking Pig was amusing to a young person
in the 1940s at any rate.

But this group rec.arts.sf.written is about
stories not about reality and people who want to talk
about the reality of impossibility should be disregarded
Dalton is in my filters on several groups where he
almost never seems to on topic.

I replied to a post that cross-posted or transpassed

I suppose when you talk about magic
and paranormal, it shuold be in the
real physical world, not the world
INSIDE books and movies.

Strange. Usually when they do this they include the Dr. Who groups as well.

Why not Doctor Strange? A new newsgroup specially
dedicated for Doctor Strange in the Marvel Universe
books and movies?

The real "Magic Circle" is a group in London for
the stage- and closeup- type of real magicians,
its elite "Inner Circle" limited to those who have
created illusions that existing IC members have
been unable to figure out.

He would have a place here in rec.arts.sf.written
because long before he was a movie creation he was a literary
character. I never got into those books beyond the first
volume or so because they are written for Children who
are feeling downtrodden by the adults.

David Dalton is a believer in "real magic" and
continues over many years to promulgate his views on
that matter.

You are talking about "real magic" not literary
matters and such magic is probably off topic here.

I'm coming from alt.fantasy, and don't know the culture in alt.magick.

I know a lot of people claim a lot of things about "magic" and such, yet
have a problem showing that they can do something -- anything -- cons-
istently.

Not even something simple and innate to many magical creatures, such as
darkvision.

Louis Epstein, do you have darkvision?

So to use or demonstrate real magic and/or magick,
one must first be able to see it? But how can you
see it if no one cast magic/magick? What if it's
forbidden to do it? :)

Well, let's just think about how /dark vision/ works in the real world.
The first thing to cover is that we are talking about the /real world/,
and not some fantastical idea created by some wizards on a coast. So
we start by ruling out the /eyes/. They don't see in the dark. So some
other sense must be used. Otherwise it isn't /dark vision/, it'll just
be, at best, seeing some extra colour spectrums uncommon -- or complete-
ly unknown -- among humans. Since I haven't measured the visible spect-
rum of every other person, I'll stick to the term /uncommon/ for now.
Now that we have established the basics of /dark vision/ we can start to
measure ourselves up to this standard, and figure out that we wouldn't
be able to see any magick with this either, we'd merely be able to sense
our surroundings in a fashion somewhat alien to people with eyes. And
while this is common among magickal creatures -- at least as far as I'm
able to gather on my own; it would be kind of ridiculous if this was an
uncommon feat among them -- we humans would have no use for this in our
daily lives, and shouldn't be jealous of these magickal creatures. We
simply use our magickal displays of liquid crystals, and type in our re-
plies on Usenet. That's all I wanted to say on the subject, but the
19th century run-on paragraph hit me, and now it seems I can't stop typ-
ing. And as for as I'm aware, nobody has explicitly put /dark vision/
down as forbidden and illegal in law books. Magickal and otherwise. I
guess the priests who tried to fight magick thought it could be neat to
/see in the dark/ so to speak, or they simply never thought of it. But
then I have not gone through all documents related to the prior church's
fight against magick, and don't know off-hand what they were after. All
I can say is that /dark vision/, at first glance, seems utterly useless
to /see magick/, and therefore we shouldn't expect the /magickal creatu-
res/ to see it either, even when they do have /dark vision/.

I hope that clears up some of the confusion. Have a happy magickal day!

I suspect the Holy Church no longer used the word "dark"
to describe vision that sees things normal people don't
see.

Buddism, Taoism (China), Shinto (Japan) have their own
dictionaries for this kind of things.

Why didn't they build an exact copy of the original
twin towers BUT using modern material and technology?

You don't build skyscrapers for triumph or glory,
but usage and utmost safety! :)

I suspect the original WTC twin towers were very
old and possibly had some undocumented problems.
It was built for glory and triumph, right? And
maybe in a hurry and hence a lot of compromises.
