#2161 — CrossPost Management in Thunderbird

FromL e e ††† <lee@invalid.invalid>

SubjectCrossPost Management in Thunderbird
Message-ID<uf6dnQV7aq4gFQvGnZ2dnUU7-I2dnZ2d@giganews.com>
I've recently discovered how to do something like
cross-post management on Thunderbird. It may not meet
every need or desired scenario, but it can at least mark
messages read, or delete them all together, if they've
already been loaded into another folder above it.

1. Set your news folders in the order you want them, with
the group you want to get a copy of everything on top.
2. For that top folder, no cross-post filter is needed. It
     will get everything.
3. For the next folder below that, from message filters,
select "customize" from the drop-down list on the far
left, add "Newsgroups" as a custom field, then select
that filter from the drop-down list.
4. In the next box, select "Contains"
5. In the next box, put the name of the newsgroup for your
     top level folder.
6. In "Perform these actions", select "Mark Read", or
"delete", or whatever. This means that any article which
was already posted to your top level folder, will now be
marked read or deleted (or whatever) in the folder
     below it.
7. Repeat these steps for each of the folders below that,
except add additional rows with the name of the
newsgroup for each folder that occurs above it, and be
sure to select "Match any of the following". Now, for
every folder under the top folder, it will mark read any
article that has occurred in any of the folders above
     it.

Crude, but it does seem to be working for me. At least you
don't have to see the same articles being unread over and
over again, in every group.

These days, this group alt.fan.mozilla is nearly dead. You would have
more readers if you posted in the newsgroup mozilla.support.thunderbird
on the Mozilla news server news.mozilla.org.

If you have posted in the mozilla.support.thunderbird newsgroup, your
post is not showing on the Mozilla news server news.mozilla.org where
most people are.

Several other news servers have "unofficial" copies of the newsgroup
mozilla.support.thunderbird. Posts to other news servers do not appear
on the Mozilla news server where almost everyone is who reads the group.

While mozilla.support.thunderbird is a newsgroup, it is not a *Usenet*
newsgroup. That means, the Mozilla news server chooses not to exchange
articles with other news servers.

Yeah, I found that, and realized it was a moderated group. After
replying to an article there, where people were wishing for cross-post
management, the moderator rejected it, because the conversation was old.
That's why I rarely post in moderated groups, and prefer Usenet. There's
always some dick trying to control everything.

Meanwhile, even if no one goes directly to the group, it may show up in
search results, if someone Googles it. Then, it may be something that
helps renew interest in the group.

I've been looking for a solution to cross-post management in Thunderbird
for years. When it finally came to my attention, I felt obligated to
pass it on to others. If no one cares, so be it. I imagine there are
some who still want cross-post management capabilities in Thunderbird,
and there may be some who find it indirectly, through search results.

Yeah, I understand. Thanks for the info though. I appreciate your help
and expertise in these groups.

Usenet generally frowns on necroposting, regardless of whether the
group is or is not moderated.

FYI they will not find it in a Google search of mozilla.support.thunderbird.
And it has been many years since Google had an effective search across all
groups.

I am sure there are people who care and would be interested.

Ah! Good one! And it works based on the order the groups have in the
list-view on the left? Neat. I shall try this right now, but won't know
how good it is until tomorrow...

Yes. Basically, you're using the "Newsgroup" filter to mark read (or
whatever), any articles posted to newsgroups above that folder.

And it works! I've re-ordered my groups a little to make this work, but
it works great. Thanks, great tip!

I have long used a similar but more drastic way of control. I just have
one line in a filter for all groups that says if the Newsgroups line
contains "," (just a comma - no brackets) then delete. That deletes all
cross posted messages - and as nearly every crossposted message is spam
that's good enough for me by me. If you add another line to that saying
if "Message-ID" contains "googlegroups.com" then that gets rid of the
rest of the spam. I have similar ones that remove HTML too, but as most
people stick to the Usenet rules that's not used much.
